7 month old baby girl just went through hell a bowel obstruction and surgery 2 correct it HELP!!!!!!

    I'm desperate 4 help my 7 month old great niece got extremely sick on Saturday of this past weekend,,she started throwing up bile and severe diarrhea,,she was taken to our local hospital where she saw a pediatrician,general surgeon,family town doctor whom was on for town call,,the first response she got was its only the flu your a new mother and your young and worrying for nothing,,she didn't receive any help she was told to give her baby tylenol ever four hours or when needed and gravel suppositories,,she left baby Layla got worse she struck a high fever and began vomiting up blood and the diaper change was scary also full of blood ,,she was lethargic motionless screaming pulling her legs up into her belly,,her abdomen at this point was fully distended solid and very firm,,coming from me I knew it was a bowel obstruction I have CD for 23 years now and just 5 months ago had my final surgery due to repeated bowel obstructions and the doc's never giving it time to resolve on its on I'm now left with SBS,,again another trip over to our local BUTCHER SHOP/BAND-AID-STAND and a different doctor was on,,we were hoping great he has got to help this little girl before this bowel ruptures,,he begins by saying were u not just here yesterday and were told it was the flu,,she said yes I was but,,I know there is something serious wrong with my baby she is in severe pain,,he excuse that is what babies do when there sick with the flu they wine a lot,,Layla is one of the most pleasant babies I have ever been around and I'm not just saying that cause we r family she just never had a bad day always happy like her mommy,,Shawna Layla's mom finally had enough we all did,,he finally agrees she should be admitted and IV fluids started right away and antibiotics,,blood work than took place,,another doc came in and said I'm her to give Layla her spinal tap,,we were not even informed this could be the problem we were all terrified at this point,,she still never got the results back yet and its now Wednesday,,around 4am Layla couldn't stop crying she was in so much pain,,they finally decided to do a stomach series after I begged them to cause every doctor in that hospital knows my history,,so he said to humerus he would do it,,I' SUPER PI$$ED right now and so is poor Shawna,,Dr.Graham came into her room and said we can't get the air ambulance right now cause it is to foggy so get her stuff ready we are sending her to the city hospital immediately just like that,,I ask is it a bowel obstruction he said I guess u were right I owe u an apology,,I said no bud u don't owe me anything but is her bowel ruptures before we get to the city u find a good place to HIDE I knew she could go septic very quick and die,, Layla finally arrived in the city after suffering since last Saturday its now late Monday night as soon as she got there Shawna was ushered of to sign papers I think she was still in shock and terrified that her daughter was going to have the same life I had,,which I feared more than anyone it would kill me if she was to be diagnosed with CD,,Layla went to the operating room at 6:45am by the time the room was ready the x-rays complete and the blood-work the cross-match,,it was the longest wait of our lives,,now I know how people feel we its me going its scary as HELL ,,finally the surgeon came out and said there was a knot in the bowel which was causing the belly distension,,vomiting,diarrhea,,she came out with a NG for suction which filled very fast a central line and a pic cause she was so dehydrated they couldn't get a line in her,,she is on a series of antibiotics and of course Dextrose,,KCL /40 WI POTASIUM and is under nourished so she is also hooked up to TPN,,they r keeping her in a drug induced coma so she don't have to suffer any more with pain,,she has no bowel sounds in either of the 4 quadrants and no gas,,there also giving her @ least 3 bags of bolus a day cause her in-put is way more than her out-put,,the only place with out a tube right now is a cafeter,,her white count is still through the roof her kidney and liver enzymes completely out of wack...Sorry for such a long post for those few that have a free hour to listen to me vent thank u,,I'm so happy she made it through the surgery now its day by day and she is septic as well..If anyone went through a similar situation please write me back I need all the info as I can get and the support..Thanks again everyone and sorry once more 4 this mini book I just wrote...I Love All Ya's Thanks 4 All The Advice Over The Years...Your Friend Jen And Yes I'm On The Can Lol...

This might not be CD. It sounds like volvulus:

This is very dangerous - usually it's a condition you are born with, but might not present issues until years later - in her late seventies, my mother suddenly had projectile vomiting and blood in her stool, was rushed to ER, and was operated on - it was volvulus. I'm glad your niece got the surgery she needed, and am sending good thoughts her way for successful treatment of the sepsis. Hopefully, the obstruction is a one-time only thing the surgery took care of.

Im sorry to hear she is having such troubles. I have a 7 month old little girl and this brought a few tears to my eyes. :( i couldnt imagine having to deal with that. A little one shouldnt have to deal with something so big so soon :( I worry about my girls getting crohns every day. Im crossing my fingers they dont.

I am so sorry to hear about this! It is heartbreaking to hear about a child (any child!) going thru such a horrible experience! I also will be praying for her and your family. Big (((((hugs))))) to you and I hope everything turns out ok for this little girl! Please keep us informed!

Thank u so much 4 your warm thoughts and prayers,,as I said yesterday all her lines were blowing so they had 2 do something 2 get some nutrient in her so they put in a pic line 4 her TPN,,they couldn't sedate her any more than what the morphine is doing 4 her now which she is getting it pushed throw the line in the IV @ first it was 4 times a day than 3 with children's Tylenol and toradol when needed but today she was in so much pain they had 2 up her dose back up to 4 times a day of the morphine as well as the other 2,,every time she tries 2 move she cries in her sleep and tries pulling out the NG tube,today they took her down 4 an ultra-sound which showed the NG wasn't down far enough and was laying against the wall of her belly,,so they got that fixed up,,the ultra sound showed that there is no motility in her bowel there is no bowel sounds in all 4 quadrants,there was some yesterday in the upper part of the bowel but they were very faint,,she has 3 machines hooked up one with Dextrose and an antibiotic the other saline and gravol the other is her pain pump,,but like I say her lines r all blowing,,so the pic has 3 lines that I'm pleased about but I had them numerous times I still have mine and my port and I know they hurt going in,, she opened her eyes today twice 4 a few seconds that was the high light of my day,,they r also giving her bolus(Misspelled) this is where they run the IV bags through fast 3 in a row cause her in put is triple of her out put,,they did want 2 put in a catheter but Shawna said she went through enough already so what is done is weighing the diapers,,we still can't hold her,,the surgeon said she is a very sick little girl,,the results r not back from the meningitis,,the blood work and the blood gases r done on a regular basis and 2 add 2 that she now has 2 get her sugar tested 4 times a day cause of all the fats and sugar in the TPN,,there is still a lot of stuff coming up in the NG suction now that it is working,,my niece Shawna had 3 weeks left of school 2 b an RN and they put her on total bed rest,,so now she has 2come up with the money and there only going 2 make her repeat the last year,,but in the time she was in school she was also working in a seniors home before the bed rest started and she needed 28 more hours 4 UI benefits,,the father never paid a bill he works on a fishing boat its a seasonal job but it is blown on beer and bars,,so she got the courage 2 leave him and got some social assistance and got her and the baby a little place they were very happy there,,so never deny him time with the baby and included him in all family photos,,he is up there now which all her family members gave her money 2 get what ever she needed 4 herself,,he blow ever cent of it on her buying smokes whom no one has ever smoked around the baby,,so I found a social worker today and she gave Shawna a menu with everything on it u name it and she is allowed 1 en tray 2 side orders and a dessert soup or salad and 2 beverages and what ever she wants 4 her breakfast and she never leaves the babies room ,,so she just has 2 call and they bring it up 2 her,,the ex said they wouldn't give me a card 4 three hot meals a day plus she got a $10 a day gift card its called a snack card so if she wants a snack between meals,,he is on the phone talking 2 his family saying they wouldn't give me a card cause I have a job and make 2 much money than he throws out there well Shawna can have the dinner and I'll have the supper and she don't eat breakfast so I will have that 2 and the snack card cause she don't drink tea or coffee,,I was so PI$$ED my husband wouldn't even think about taking from me he would do with out,,its not like he doesn't have the money Shawna found his pay stub from Monday he took home $980 and still took all the money we gathered up 4 her from our family so she was looked after cause he is very rude he went 2 Subway the other day got himself a foot long,chips and pop and Shawna said what did u get on my 6 inch she thought maybe half was hers but know,,I'm so sorry 4 venting about her x I guess he just will never grow up,,,Thanks so much again for your warm words and prayers it means the world 2 me and my family..Tomorrow Layla will no longer have her long curly silky hair,,the doc said when she was born its a girl and she needs a hair cut,,she lost some but we always have it up in pig tails and we can even french braid it a little I wish u could all c how beautiful she is u can my name is Jennifer Bowser from the net work of Halifax look me up on face book,,so I can show ya a pic of her I had them done professionally there amazing but she loves the camera and it loves her back,,what made me bring up her hair was the doctor said that tomorrow they r going 2 have 2 thinking of you and your family. I agree with mouth, babies are so resilient. I hope she improves day by day and hopefully this was a volvulus rather than CD (this seems more likely to me). I also wanted to mention, last time I was in the hospital for CD, my dr told me that a lot of time people retain fluids, then as their bodies heal a little, they get back to normal and output more until things are back to normal. I don't know if this applies to babies as well, but maybe that's why her output is less that what they're putting in.

Please update us on her condition. Hopefully you will have good things to share as she heals.

You CAN"T blame yourself for any of this. In fact, had you not been there to insist that she be seen in the ER, things would be way worse now.

Sorry to hear things aren't getting better. I can't imagine how hard this is for you and your family. Praying she starts getting better.

Such a scary event... I just wanted to send good thoughts and healing wishes for your niece. It's so good that you were there to push the doctors. And, thank goodness she's receiving so much care now. I will keep her in my thoughts. And, yes... please let us know how she's doing... *if* you have the time.

Sorry I didn't get back to thank everyone,,things r still dark she is getting more distended her little belly looks like its ready 2 bust,,its killing me,,its so hard when they r that young and there is nothing in the world u can do 4 them,,they took out the pic line cause it wasn't positioned right than put in the 3 line central which u could hear her little screams I felt like kicking in the door and pounding everyone there,,but I know its 4 her own good,,she is still on the morphine pain pump and there starting 2 taper her of slowly,,so she opened her little baby blues 4 a second,,but she is very agitated I don't know if its from the drugs or what,,but she is pulling at the NG tube the central line and her belly,,I know my family don't realize what they r doing right now but all they keep saying is OMG Jen what if she ends up with a life like yours and it breaks my heart,,they have no idea what that child is going through we do,,the doctors would like 2 scope her but its to dangerous where her bowel is still so distended and as well as u all know it could cause a rupture,,so fingers crossed everything works out well I wouldn't wish this disease upon my worst enemy,,I'm 35 years old had so many bowel obstructions I lost count most resolved on there own till the narrowing got that bad and dilatation's didn't work any more,,so more surgery now I have SBS and weigh 78pounds and I'm 5/6 it sucks but it could always be worse I'm here I'm a fighter and I will not let this disease run my life or take it anyway from me,,So god please watch over Layla let her lead a healthy happy long life without pain and suffering amen..Thanks again everyone I'll keep ya posted..

Thanks mouth things r looking up a little today they tried her on her bottle but the milk made her vomit and the baby food the same but they took her of the morphine pump and now she is on dilaudid which maybe it was 2 hard on her little belly,,I'm going 2 the city in the morning,,so bed now and thank u 4 all the support u guys really r my best friends...

I am so sorry for what Laila and your whole family is going through.  I am keeping Laila and all of you in my thoughts and prayers that she will soon again back to life doing the usual things babies do.  Please keep us posted.
