Hernia right after surgery

hey all..

I had my resection surgery 4 weeks ago...picked up an infection while in hospital...am still on antibiotics... now doc says the very top of my insision has a very small hernia..going to see the surgeon for a follow up tomorrow... I have no clue what I have done to cause this.. I have rested .. not lifted anything heavy... got in and out of bed...gone to a few doctors appoinments..and thats about it... Has anyone else had this happen...and if so.. how do they go about dealing with it?... I admit.. this is all getting to me..and my axiety is starting to go crazy... I just want to recover and get my life somewhat back to normal

I developed a hernia after my resection. They called it an incisional hernia but it was no where near my incisions. I didn't lift anything nor do anything I wasn't supposed to but ended up with a hernia anyway. I had surgery to repair it about 6 months after the resection. They used mesh to repair it. It was not pleasant. The doc was awesome but the nurses at the hospital should be in jail.

I ended up with another hernia because the edge of the mesh tore. This one also required surgery to repair it. I waited years to repair the second hernia because the surgery for the first hernia was so awful.

As for what they will do, it depends on the size and location of the hernia and your lifestyle. Sometimes they won't repair a small hernia right away. If you do need a surgical repair, do some research and get another opinion.

I also have a hernia from my first surgery, that appeared not long afterwards. I had my resection 4 yrs ago and every time i have spoken to the specialist or doctors they said, as long as its not bothering you or causing pain, dont do anything about it. I eventaully have now been referred to the surgeons who said they will remove it, but unfortunately for me they wont do it at the moment due to me just starting Humira. But I have a follow up appointment in March, and he said then he will put me on the list to have it sorted out. It's just annoying some times when I have to undo my trousers as sometimes it sticks out so much that it makes me uncomfortable.
Much luck and try and get it sorted whilst it's still small, as it probably will get bigger in time!

I have had an incisional hernia since my resection in 2006. It only really bothers me when I eat a big meal or am on my feet for a very long period of time. I have decided to let it be.

Yep me too.

I had a resection surgery in Sept. 2009 and then developed a incisional hernia in April 2011.

Now I am going to see the surgeon again, because I am almost positive I have another one!!!! shocked

I can't let it be though because it is giving me discomfort & pain! cry

Me too - First surgery was in 2000 and then several more within a two year time span. Doc thought it might have developed from being cut opened so many times in the same place. He said as long as it didn't bother me he wasn't going to mess with. 11 years later it is still there - I can feel it, but it doesn't hurt and I haven't had suurgery on it yet.

I'm glad it is not bothering you. I wish you many more years of being pain free & not having to be cut opened again.

Like we don't have enough to worry about! :)
