Zoloft - How long does it take to kick in and work?

Has anyone been on Zoloft to cope with anxiety from living/having Crohn's Disease? I had an appt with my Dr on Monday to discuss some anxiety issues I've been having since being diagnosed with Crohn's. Never had any anxiety issues before. So she suggested to put me on Zoloft. I was put on 25mg for one week and then will go up to 50mg. I have a follow up appt in 6 weeks to see how I am doing on it. Just curious if anyone has been on it and did it help you? Also how long did it take to kick in? I was hoping for something that kicked in as soon as it was taken. Since I don't have this anxiety all the time. But doesn't seem as though Zoloft does that. I was very nervous to discuss this so I even forgot to ask how long it takes to work. She may have told me but don't remember. I have an appt tomorrow about going back to college maybe and I'm wicked nervous. Guess the new meds won't help this soon! Thanks!!

I have been on it, and it takes about 2 weeks to kick in. It worked well for me. You should call her back and ask for a scrip for some xanax to use in the mean time. You would just take a xanax when you are feeling anxiety and it should bring some relief.

Too late tonight now and guess I should have asked earlier. I have the appt @ 10am tomorrow so wouldn't be able to get the script in time. Guess it would be good for future use. Thanks for the idea! I'll have to get in touch and ask. I don't want to look like I'm seeking drugs since I'd be asking for something by name.

Ya I totally understand that...too bad she didn't give you some to get you through. Mine only gives me a certain number with no refills, so she keeps track how much I am using it. I still would call and see if she can give you some for the next two weeks though.

I am a rare person but usually I can tell if an antidepressant is going to work for me in the first few days, if not the first day. I hope it works for you. I now take lexapro.

So I called and it would be my luck that she is off on Thursdays!! With my background with being sick all the time the nurse said that another Dr in the same practice wouldn't feel comfortable giving an RX for something like that. So I had a break down freaked out and now I'm fine. I did make it to the appt and it was fine and all. It's just the fact of going places and if something happens, etc. Also called a therapist office today to try and get some help that way. Never thought I would in a million years but can't live like this anymore. I just want to be normal again and not worry about leaving the house or anything. Tonight will be day 4 on the Zoloft and haven't noticed anything yet so hopefully soon! Luckily don't have anything coming up in the next week or two. I hate feeling anxious all the time!!

Brie812- That is great to hear that it's one of the best things you've found to work for you. I think for me it was something I wanted and new I needed but didn't want to admit it. I'm 25 and broke down to my mom today and told her I could finally admit it. I think I didn't want to admit it because who wants to have two problems after have none your entire life? Not me! I hope I'm able to get on Xanax or something like it to just take the edge off when it comes on sudden. How many appts did it take for you to notice that therapy was helping you? I called today gave my info and they said they would give it to the head person to look over to find a therapist that fits my needs. Said I should hear back my the start of next week at the latest. I'm excited and nervous to go. I want to go for the help but not one to talk about my problems with a stranger who doesn't understand. I guess she or he will be trained but still. See here I go again don't want to admit!! lol. I would love to know the title of the books. I'm willing to try anything at this point. Thank you!

Hey just fyi, with antidepressants it can take up to 6 weeks to reach full efficacy. So if you need something for the anxiety right now, you might ask for something like Xanax on those bad days. I tried Zoloft for a bit, but it really upset my stomach alot. Hugs!

Thanks for the fyi Gail. Ya not a fan of how long it takes to kick in. At this point I'm thinking a shot of tequila before leaving the house for now on until the Zoloft kicks in. No I'm kidding! Will have to call my PCP tomorrow and ask for something and also let her know I decided to make an appt with a therapist finally.

You don't know that what you have just said has made me feel 10x better about all of this. I can handle waiting a couple weeks to really see the true benefits that beats no help. I feel like today I have made a start to a new me. Would love the old me back but this new me will have to do. I think that may be the hardest part is accepting that Crohn's will be part of our life. Your words have really helped me I appreciate that so much. I just looked on Barnes and Nobles for that book I am going to order that. Thanks for sharing! If you are denied Xanax for whatever reason you can ask for Atarax (hydroxyzine).

You sound like how I was a couple months ago...with all of my GI problems and hospitalizations recently I became extremely withdrawn and didn't want to leave the house. I didn't want to do any of the things I usually enjoyed. I had never had any mental health issues before so it was kind of strange to bring it up to my Dr. He gave me an RX for Celexa and honestly it took about 8 weeks to fully kick in. NO side effects though. I really didn't know if it was working because I didn't feel any different for weeks, then at the 8 week mark I realized I had been in an excellent mood and I suddenly loved my job (and this was definitely a new development, lol). That is when I knew it had kicked in.
