Hi all,
I am currently in remission, however i do get mouth ulcers from time to time. Within the next few days, I'm going to be getting fixed braces on my teeth to straighten them up. I was just wondering if anyone had any good ideas as to how i can minimise the damage they will do to my cheeks etc as i dont want a year full of awful ulcers while they are on! Does any1 have any experience with this?
Thanks

My son is prone to mouth ulcers. (I have Crohn's -hopefully this isn't a sign that he might have it in the future!?) Anyway.. he had to wear braces and we made sure that he always had the special wax put on any rough areas that could irritate his cheeks. They usually give it to you at the orthodontists office and you can buy more at a drug store. He did fine! Good luck! You'll have a beautiful smile when you're done! :)

Gargle with warm salt water. My daughter has braces and this is what the dr recommended. It has really helped.

I have braces now (did it a little older in life and got them put on this past February) and I also have CD and am prone to mouth ulcers. I use the wax (mentioned above) a little but I find it less than helpful for me. What do I do? I keep my mouth super clean!!! That means brushing lots and gargling mouthwash and flossing etc. I have gotten a couple bad sore spots over the past few months and slept with gause in the jaw to keep my braces from chaffing my cheeks during the night. I found that very helpful. But overall, the main thing is an extra high level of dental health. Believe me- it is worth it! I love my teeth already and have another year to go. :)
Best of luck

thanks for the advice guys :)
the braces are on and i can tell that some ulcers are going to be inevitable, but im going to use the wax and keep my mouth super clean and so i'm hoping that i'l be able to minimise the damage! The orthodontist also gave me a hydrogen peroxide mouth wash in addition to the normal fluoride mouthwash.
thanks again!

i'm a dentist. warm salt water is so simple yet so effective. other ideas are hydrogen peroxide, but not every day or anything close to that. maybe once a week or twice a week. also, mouthwash with essential oils can help, listerine. all of the antimicrobial rinses will kill bacteria and give it a chance to heal quicker before it becomes a true problem or an urgent one. if you can get your hands on a paste with oil of cloves in it, it will help too. basically there is no true treatment for the rawness itself, but by killing all the bacteria the rawness will heal more quickly from all the microtrauma and abrasions causing micro cuts in the soft tissue from the brackets.
good luck
