I have unsightly scars on my abdomen (large vertical line, huge dent from abscess drained and large wound left
open to heal) and have researched plastic surgery in an attempt to remove the scars-- or at least make it less distorted. Tummy tuck surgery seems to be the only thing I can find-- has anyone considered this?
I wouldn't do it until I'm done having children and have had years of remission. I know I would have a scar from the tummy tuck but it would be low and a line (as opposed to a huge gap that shows even under shirts), and I realize it's a risk considering that I may have another surgery-- but I'm willing to take that.
I'm already thin, so losing weight wouldn't change the appearance of it.

I'm one of those people who truly believe, that if by doing something (like a tummy tuck), that you will
feel better, then go ahead and do it!!

I agree with Dunny. But....with this darn disease you could go and spend all the money, and then only a short time later have the disease cause a blockage or something and then it would all be for naught.
I think about
the expense part of it, at least thats what I would do for myself. JMHO Good luck with whatever decision you make.

If it would make you happy, then I'd say go for it! It's your body and you can't let Crohn's run your body for you...the only thing I'd be afraid of personally, would be the stress of the procedure possibly precipitating a flare. Though that very well might not happen if you find the right meds and are in good remission.
I'd talk to a plastic surgeon...a tummy tuck might not be your only option.

I had a tummy tuck 'thrown in' for very little $ when I had my hysterecomy / culpo suspension of the bladder surgery. It tidied up a lot of spare skin left from having large babies that was most uncomfortable. I never mentioned my crohns to my surgeons because I didn't think it was relevant but afterwards was told if they had known they wouldn't have done the surgery and it did cause difficulties when I needed bowel surgery later. Even so I never regretted doing it :)
Might be a good idea to get an opinion from a surgeon but do make sure you mention the crohns ;)

I had a scar revision done when my surgeon repaired an abdominal hernia from my previous resections. My vertical incision is midline and was an inch wide at some points due to the incision having to heal from the inside out after my colostomy reversal surgery. I developed what I thought was a small (non-painful) hernia about
an inch from the top of the incision. When he went in for the repair, my surgeon said that the hernia was significantly larger than he expected. He was able to close the incisions (he also revised my ostomy scar) and they healed fine. The widest segment now is about
1/4 inch or less.

Lyova, I agree with the others, but if docs go your way, then why not?

I plan on getting one once I lose about
60lbs. I was going to get one regardless just because I have some extra skin from being overweight my entire life. But now I also have a 3 inch scar that is about
an inch or so deep right above my belly button from my last resection.

this!

If you find a really good surgeon that is familiar with Crohn's disease then I don't see too much of a problem. The one thing that does stick out in my mind as a possible issue is your ability to heal and infection. Anytime you have surgery on your abdoman, you also run the risk of adhesions, fistulas, staph infections, and scar tissue. I am sure that a good plastic surgeon could deal with the scar tissue rather easily but the other issues are something that should really be considered. Now, if you are already going in for another resection or abdominal surgury and they are already going to
open you up, I see that as a great excuse to do the other work that you have mentioned since you are already being cut and sewn back together. In the mean time, I have heard about
girl using an undergarment called spanks to hide excess skin or to firm up without surgery. I am a man and don't know all the fun tricks but I do have a sister that had gastric bypass last year and wears something similiar to spanks to help with her excess skin until she is done losing weight and has the skin removed. She has lost about
150 lbs now and whatever she wear under her clothes hides any hint of rolls or skin impressions. She said that if she did not have it on that her clothes would look really weird because of the way that the skin hangs. I am sure that it if can hide her problem than it may help hide the scar situation that you are having.

Geez , a tummy tuck will get rid of Droopy too. What about
, Grumpy , Sleepy and Dopey . That would cure about
50% of my personality disorders . Lyova , you never said if you talked to your doc or what you decided to do .

i had it done 2 years after my resection because the scar was so purple and also ran vertically with staple marks on each side (looked like a train track). to put it kindly, i had a "butt in front" (we all called it that!). anyways, my self-esteem was ruined completely.
in 2007, saw one of the best surgeons here in montreal (after a 2 year waiting list) and got it fixed for about
$3000. the scar is still there but its so faint and straight that i dont even realize its there unless i stare.
i would do it over and over again. i really helped me greatly!

Not all plastic surgeons will turn you away just because of Crohn's. I had a breast reduction a few years ago and had no complications. Take into account that my CD was not active and I continued Humira after surgery. My surgeon said he wouldn't have done it if the Crohn's was active, or had recently been.
I have thought, if I had enough money, that I'd love to have a tummy tuck.
Noories-that's what I call mine...a "butt in the front" Hahaha.
