Who else has bad appetite?

Am I the only one who has days were I can't eat literally it makes me sick, my mom says to get over it that I can't afford a low appetite (she's a little nicer than that but thats all I hear). Plus on top of the meal she exspects me to drink an ensure, who hear drinks those, they are death in a bottle. My mom says its just liquid but it seems ALOT thicker than just liquid. And one more thing, does anyone here feel like people can be insinsitive to crohn's! Family says "Oh it could be worse" yes granted it could be worse but I'm sorry Crohn's isn't exactly easy especially when you have a severe case :/

Seriously though how many of you drink or have had to drink ensure and found it hard to drink on those days of low appetite :(

I got diagnosed in March 2006, severe. At first i spent four months with nausea and almost no appetite. I couldnt eat without feeling like throwing up. Only ate soup.

As for ensure, i tried that once. It was horrible and my mom ended up drinking the pack.
Some days i still dont eat much or just once a day. Just eat what you can.

My problem is I'm 5'7 and 95 pounds my mom heard about someone getting so thin that their body ate its self and now she's convinced thats going to happen to me, she nags me cause she cares but like you said sometimes I can't eat without throwing up and I don't know if I should be worried, I did just have surgery so weight should be exspected right, I'm still lost with all this had crohn's for little under two years SEVERE crohn's and I'm still not familiar with all the side affects of it :/

I am 6' tall and was 250 pounds when i got sick. Ended up at 145 before i stopped losing weight. A change in my meds (started taking imuran) helped me. After I started on humira a was able to gain some weight and my appetite mostly returned.

Have you tried Boost...its abit better tasting and they have puddings as well that are not bad. If you can tolorate Ice cream try making into a shake it helps get it down better.

Son has them religiously everyday(now on only one per day to supplement his diet) If he really doesn't feel like eating normal food he now automatically reaches for a bottle of the stuff (diff make to Ensure though)

What has amazed me is how compliant he is with taking them-he really doesn't have an issue with them.

Everything you asked is very common for most of us. Family does not get it, food is not our friend, and yeah sometimes we have to eat or drink things we don't want to. I am currently in remission, feel pretty good, but for some unknown reason I am losing weight. Hubby wants me to drink Ensure, but I am trying to eat more instead. If my way doesn't work, then the Ensure or Boost is going to be mandatory. Can't afford to lose more weight. Hugs~

I feel the same as Nanners, I don't have much of an appetite either. This seems to have got worse over the years
too, and I'm still losing. However, I'm not as underweight as you Ruthy. If you can't tolerate ensure ( I don't blame you)
maybe boost, or some of the breakfast drinks. Maybe mix it up a bit, there's quite a few on the market now. I wish you
a lot of luck hun !!

Ruthy, I am in the same boat as you in a way, I'm 5'9" and I currently weigh 102 lbs. I was 89 Ibs when I got out of the hospital a few months ago, I'm on prednisone currently. I gained 12 lbs in a few weeks, but haven't gained anything in a while.
I can drink the ensures but after about a week on them I get sick of them and they are hard to drink, I have a good appetite now because of the steroids, but I know what its like to now feel like eating because it makes me sick, that's what happens during a flare up. I get to the put where I can't keep anything down, so I don't want to eat. At first my parents didn't really understand, and would nag me, but now they are more understanding and trust me, that I will let them know when I need help or need something.

My mom used to say that at least I didn't have cancer or a life threatening disease, and I agree with her but it still hurt because at some times I suffered just as bad, but now that we understand the disease more and now what works and doesn't she doesn't make comments like that anymore. She once told me that I was going to be dead early if I didn't take control of my disease and such, but I know she didn't mean she was just stressed out and was having a hard time with me being in the hospital.

Things will get better as you learn about the disease and what works and doesn't work

oh yeah - totally understand - I am going through it right now also. I get hungry but get something to eat and by the time i have a few bites in me I am either fool or want to puke.

The mornings are the hardest for me - feels like I have morning sickness until about noon-1pm then I actually get hungry enough to want to eat and actually do eat.

Had the same discussion with my GI yesterday about my weight - I am 5'6" and weigh about 119 (I have lost 20 pounds in the last 3 months with this flare - mostly compliments of D, Flagyl and just pain when I eat so why eat?

I hate ensure/boost and all those pre-mixed drinks just kill my stomach/digestive system with whatever is in them.

My GI and I have an agreement when I get really low on my weight that I start making my own "protein drinks" I use Brown Rice or Egg White Protein Powder and mix them with Almond Milk and drink that instead - oh yes and take my "Flintstone Chewables" vitamin and it will make him happy.

I think that it bothers my hubby the most about the weight I keep loosing - but what can we do honestly?

All I can do is wait until my gut heals - I start Entocort today and my GI Doc is hoping that it will help me put on a "few pounds" in his words. LOL!

Thank you guys for all the encouragement and advice, I'm chugging the ensure and hoping it stays down, luckily I went to my dr today and she is starting on Humira which last time I was on it it increased my appetite, I'll let you guys know how it works :/ and I'll be exploring the options!

I know exactly how you feel. One thing that would help me with the ensure was drinking it with a straw. Or when I couldn't drink those I would make my own shakes, make a smoothie or milk shake.

I totally understand the dealing with your mom. One flare I had while I was still living at home, I got so thin my mom was writing down everything I ate and the calories trying to make me eat a certain amount of calories that she found acceptable. It was horrible sitting at the table trying to eat and my mom trying to make me eat.

My fiance is good about it. He falls in between me and my mom, he will make sure I am eating but doesn't get as crazy as my mom. Sometimes he will say so you eat dinner I will go get you or make you anything, from any restaurant the store whatever.

I'll try the straw I've never tried that and yes my mom counts my calories, your right the more she nags the harder it seems to eat!
