14 Weeks preggo andgetting put on cimzia for crohns

Well,

 for starters I am a new member. That in itself says it all. So as I learn I will grow with education on what to ask about and learn about the site.

I am hospitalized right now for a flair with my crohns disease. I am 14 weeks preggo, and since surgery is NO option they are considering Cimzia. My question is has anyone or do you know anyone who has been on this drug while pregnant and carried there baby to term with no birth defects. My mood grows stronger by the hour since I have about 8 dr working on me to control my inflammed intestines so I dont have to have the several feet removed like I did last year. I understand this drug is in the class b section which is okay for babys but has not been advised on human babies only animal ones. I honestly have this child on my mind because of the fact we have lost two in the last two years and I have been hospitalized  a handful of times. I just need others opinions about following through with the cimzia while Im 14 weeks and do you feel I am making the right choice. I dont know anyone with this disease so I am just asking for help from others who do have it and what they may know that could be beneficial for me to know....

If you can control your crohns with something else that is proven to be safe with pregnancy then do so as this drug has not been well tested yet for use in pregnancy.

Pregnancy Category B - Because certolizumab pegol does not cross-react with mouse or rat TNFα, reproduction studies were performed in rats using a rodent anti-murine TNFα pegylated Fab' fragment (cTN3 PF) similar to certolizumab pegol. Reproduction studies have been performed in rats at doses up to 100 mg/kg and have revealed no evidence of impaired fertility or harm to the fetus due t o cTN3 PF. There are, however, no adequate and well-controlled studies of CIMZIA in pregnant women. Because animal reproduction studies are not always predictive of human response, this drug should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed.

CONGRATS on your pregnancy!!! I'm sorry you're flaring. I haven't taken Cimzia while pregnant. That being said, I have 2 remicade babies and 1 humira baby. Cimzia is very similar to both of those meds and if it is listed as a Category B - then I would advise you to go ahead and take it. If it makes you feel any better - I'm trying for one more baby and I am getting ready to switch from Humira to Cimzia. I plan on taking Cimzia while pregnant. Everything I've read about it is very positive.
Having been pregnant a handful of times here are my thoughts -
1) you are past the 1st trimester so all the formative things are done, so that's good
2) Every link I've read says Cimzia does not cross the placenta (due to its large molecular structure)

Hopefully this information helps a bit. I'm so sorry you've lost two babies in two years. That's devastating. I've had 3 miscarriages, so I can relate to the loss. I had two losses before my first baby. But she came and she was healthy and is 6 going on 16. I wish the same for you. Take the Cimzia. You and your baby will be ok. Keeping you in my thoughts.
