Looking for some help with my Humira...

The first couple of times are going to sting because you are injecting something foreign into your body, the nurse that showed me basically said there really isn't anything to help with the stinging, but over time it should go away because it is not as foreign. She was right, I've only been on for a few months but it doesn't sting any more.

I leave mine out for 15-20 min. Thats what my Remicade/Humira nurse said to do, and I used to ice, but that makes it worse. I just do them without it now. =) and let the alcohol prep dry well before injection. =) Hope it gets better.

so it sounds like it doesn't really get any easier.... bummer. atleast its only gonna be 2 tomorrow, instead of the 4. and then its only 1 every other week.

Best to ask your doctor or nurse if you are concerned, but my feeling is that with just a "kinda" head cold you should be ok.

But if you're unsure or concerned, then please ask. And definitely ask at any sign of infection or fever.

My son found heat the best before and after the shot. It is notoriously painful - after 2 1/2 years he quit doing them = mainly because of that.

We warmed up a sock with rice in it in the microwave so it was pleasantly warm, he'd hold that on the spot for the injection until it was warm. Then we'd quickly clean the spot, do the shot and then he would immediately put the warm pack back on for 5 minutes or longer.

We left the shot out for up to 30 minutes to come to room temp before hand.

My son had a flu-like reaction to Humira. Nothing the first time. The second round of loading doses he had a fever of 102+ within 2 hours and was really sick for 3 days. Then he was suddenly better as if he'd never been sick.

After that he always had a milder flu-like illness for 24 - 36 hours afterwards.

When this didn't stop his doctor had us premedicate him with 2 tylenol PM's - which is the same as 1000 mg tylenol and 50 mg benadryl.

This helped a lot. We also moved his shot to Friday evenings immediately before bed. That way he slept through the worst of the reaction and had a weekend day to recover completely.

I used to do the injection in the belly, but after I heard someone that had a lot of fat there, the absorption was not as good.

Since the injection is intramuscular, I give it to myself on the thigh. Have tried all methods: squeeze a chunk of the thigh, massage the thigh first and so on.

What works for me: Stretch out the leg, relax the muscle, take three deep breaths, at the beginning of the third exhale I fire the pen and hold it for 20 seconds (even though 8 seconds is enough). This pressing down of the pen on the thigh minimizes the sting for me.

I take it bi-weekly massaging the spot one minute before.try it,it works!
