passing gas through my vagina

For about two months now I have been passing gas through my vagina. It only happens when I try to hold my gas in when I'm around other people and do not want to let it out. I can NOT hold the gas in. It comes out through my vagina. No feces or anything else comes out. Its just the gas. If I do not try to hold the gas in I have no problems with it coming out the back door. It doesn't come out of my vagina at any other time unless like I said I've tried to hold it in. Im having a colonoscopy dont on Wednesday due to bleeding when I go #2. Maybe I can have it checked while he is looking around in there.

Probably a fistula, sounds like it.

That was also my first thought, but what threw me off was the fact there is no feces coming through. Its only when I try to hold it in. Then it just comes out my vagina and there is NO way to hold that in.

I had a fistula that ate a hole in my bladder and I passed gas,and food when I would urinate, I'm adude.

Hi, they can check that when you have the colonoscopy (they did for me). Let them know, so you can find out if it's a fistula. They used water to test me for fistula while I was out for the colonoscopy - just sent some water up the colon and watched it come out in other places (vagina). For me, that confirmed where the fistula was. Hope you are ok.

sparkles, no it didn't hurt, I went to take a leak and air came out then I started seeing food, but when I told my urologist, he felt a lump like golf ball size was protruding where my resection site is now, immediately put me in hosp. with cath. and then for two weeks tried to build me up for the major surgery that they did, the removal of 8ft of small bowel.

I have a small recto-vaginal fistula that I pass gas through - nothing but gas at this point.

My OB/Gyn couldn't see it during my yearly pap smear so it got passed back to my GI.

My GI was able to determine that there is a small one there during my colonoscopy, it has not bothered me since being on Methotrexate the past year.

At this point the GI just lets it alone and I am hoping that the MTX has kept it under control :)

i know i'm late to this fistula party, but i fear my day has come. i have a tiny opening near the lip of my vag (basically near the undertruss, haha) that has had some gas coming out for about a month now. and like previous posters, its only when I try to keep it from coming out of my butt. The first time it happened I was luckily on my ER rotation, and I blamed the smell on a drunk guy passed out in one of the beds. However, this excuse isn't going to fly when I'm in the OR next month in close quarters with a bunch of other people. I cannot fart on the people I hope to be my future bosses.

my question is--is there any way to slow/stop the gas? the hole is so darn tiny, it can't be more than 1-2 mm. and yet the amt of AWFUL smelling gas that can leak out is incredible. i'm beyond embarrassed. HELP.

Hi Linn,

I think you need to try to reduce your gas. Hopefully the flagyl will help close up that fistula soon.

I suggest the days you're in OR or other confined areas, try eliminating everything gassy, like dairy, hard to digest meats and proteins, broccoli, cauliflower, etc. Also, imodium or an anti-gas (gas-x?) might help those days. Have you tried probiotics yet? I take Garden of Life Primal Defense and they help with bloating and gas. Just go slow with probiotics, as they can cause detox effects.

I'm not sure what else to recommend, but maybe your GI will have more suggestions. I hope you will solve this problem soon and good luck with your studies!

Hey Linn,
I went on an all ensure liquid diet, (no solid food), for two weeks and had almost no gas, which is weird for me, but good! If you can tolerate ensure maybe try it for a couple of days before you need to work in close quarters with others. Good luck!

Yes, it sounds like a fistula.

I'm not sure this'll help, but worth a try: maybe use those cotton rounds (makeup removal pads) and tuck one over your little opening. Maybe it'll absorb some of the odor?? You'll also be able to tell from looking at the cotton round if there's any drainage, even small amounts.
