Anyone have eczema?

Just wondering if anyone has suffered with eczema. It's also an immune response disorder. My daughter has been on Imuran for about 1.5yrs. now, and hasn't had any eczema flare ups in quite some time. 

For about the last week, she's had some break out on her face. I find it surprising to have an eczema flare while on immunosuppressants. Does anyone have any experience with that, or have any idea why this would occur?

My husband has trouble with eczema. He gets these spots of eczema on his hands - his knuckles and the webbing between the fingers, and they crack and bleed. He's on Remicade, but he's had problems with patches of eczema on various parts of his body even before he started Remicade, so i don't think I can blame the Remicade.

It seems when you have one auto-immune disorder, you have a good chance of getting another auto-immune disorder. He recently saw his dermatologist, and she prescribed him some steroid creams, but we didn't want him to have to take more steroids (even the creams are systemically absorbed to some extent), since he was diagnosed earlier this year with osteopenia of the spine.

So, I did some reading online, and people were saying that vaseline helped heal eczema. So my husband now has vaseline with q-tips at home and at work. So, after he washes his hands, he puts a light coat of vaseline over the eczema spots, and sure enough they have healed completely. They are soft and supple, where before they were hard, cracked and bleeding.

I'm sure there are other things out there that work for eczema. For now, I'm just glad my hubby didn't have to take any more steroids. I think the immunosuppresants are not fool proof; just like you can have a flare-up of crohn's while on immuno-suppresant, you can have a flare-up of eczema too. I think she may need something to help knock this back - like cortizone cream.

Hope this goes away soon for your daughter, and she can go back to not worrying about any of this.

I'm 29, I've had eczema since I was 2. It comes and goes but gets really bad during times of high stress, flares, etc. Cortisone cream doesn't really help for eczema since it dries the area too much, and eczema is dry skin as it is! Protopic is wonderful, it's a bit greasy when you put it on, so I put it on before bed. I've been on about a dozen different prescriptions through the years and that works the quickest and best. It's only available through prescription and if you don't have insurance, it's about $130, not cheap! I was on Imuran for 2 years and Remicade currently; for me, it didn't make much difference with eczema flare ups concerning the type of medication I was on. Basically a direct relationship: colon acts up, skin breaks out. I've been on Remicade for 2 years. Right now I'ven been super stressed having just gotten married and finishing up nursing school so my body is not happy with me, and I've been in an eczema flare-up for about a month. Hope this helps!

We'll definitely give the Vaseline a try. Sounds like the easiest solution if it works for her.

Not sure I understand what you're saying. Imuran didn't prevent eczema, but was working on inflammation? Would you say that when you had an eczema flare-up, you were also likely to have an intestinal flare-up as well? Will ask the Dr. about Protopic though.

I have eczema. The ONLY things that keeps it in check are: 2000 mg Ester-C vitamin C and 400 IU Vitamin E. Cortisone shots, steroids, and creams did not work at all. I am also on Cimzia for Crohn's which could be helping too.

I've had eczema all my life. My mom used to give me baths with Keri Oil in the water and we used to have a steroid cream to put on when it was really bad. Now its just bad in the winter and if I keep a humidifier going it doesn't get too bad. I wish I could find the Keri Oil but I can't. I can find lotion but not the oil.

i find mine gets bad when i am stressed, or when the weather out here is cold and damp.. Vaseline is my friend. I lather it on when i go to bed,,i have spots on my lower lip,between my eyebrows, and sometimes on my eye lid.

My husband recently started using Triderma Eczema Fast Healing Cream. He says it is working even better than the vaseline. Perhaps you can give that a try and see if it has similar results for you.

There was an article in the NY Times a year or so ago that spoke of a daily bleach bath helping with certain forms of eczema that are caused by a bacteria. It was something like a quarter cup of bleach in the gallons of water needed to fill up the tub. The bleach was diluted enough not to burn the skin but potent enough to kill the bacteria.

I was trying to say that none of my meds for Crohn's had any affect on my eczema, referring to a previous post about eczema being an autoimmune prob as well. It did help for the Crohn's but didn't notice any difference in the outbreaks of eczema while on Imuran. Hope that clarifies.

I have bad eczema on my hands - seems to flare when my crohns does. I used to use prescription cream too - but seemed to be a losing battle. Now I use vaseline as often as possible and it has really helped ! The only other thing that has helped is prednisone - when I was on that I had no eczema at all!
