I will see the gyn a couple of weeks before my resection/hysterectomy surgery, but my guess is she won't have a lot of info on the effects of a hysterectomy and CD.

So, any other ladies here have a hysterectomy and how does it affect your CD?

Had a complete hysterectomy at the age of 36 (removal of uterus and ovaries and cervix). For me at least, it was a BIG improvement because I no longer was menstruating and going thru that misery each month. Now I take my little 1 mg Estrace every evening and all is good!

Had one when they were still trying to figure out my diagnoses for crohns. But things improved some afterwards.

Best thing I ever did surgically - had a culpo suspension of the bladder at the same time so now I can sneeze and not cross my legs <grin> no issues with the crohns at all! Hope it goes well for you :)

Roni, I was wondering the same thing... I will have the same surgery in the next couple of months. They are still in the planning stages. (and our surgical wait times are a bit long here) Gyno and colorectal surgeon are working together.

One thing I am hoping for is getting rid of that monthly mini flare I have with each period. Though if I keep my ovaries I am not sure if that would change.

Please keep us updated on how you are doing.

Westat I am so happy that I removed my ovaries too. I had a friend (non crohnie) who had a hysterectomy removing only her uterus about 2 years before I had mine. She still had bad PMS issues even though she no longer had periods. I didn't want to go thru that as I had horrible pms issues after having my tubes tied, so I had the ovaries and cervix removed too. Best thing (in my eyes) I ever did. Now I take a little 1 mg Estrace pill everynight, and life is so much better in that sense and no more of those mini flares each month. Before my hysterectomy I was usually miserable about 3 weeks out of every month. Hugs!

Thanks Nanners for your insight. I do not get sit down consut with Gyno till early March, so I guess we will talk then about the ovaries. they are definitely taking uterus and cervix. Though I will discuss with my col/rectal surgeon about the possible benefits of taking the ovaries for my Crohns when I see her in Feb....

What to do what to do...... always a guessing game with Crohn's....

Roni, Yes I will be having a resection too. It will be my 3rd one. I may also end up with a temp ileostomy this time too because I had such a hard time healing last time, and now I am on double dose remi, so doc thinks it may be the same this time.

Are you as overwhelmed with it all as I seem to be for some reason? I am usually not much of a worrier, but this double surgery has me all twisted in the head...lol

Yes, I am overwhelmed and I wish I could get out of it. My periods have *somewhat* regulated over the last couple of months, but they have been wonky and heavy for years. I had the option of IUD or endometrial ablation, but because I've had a mild heart problem, I am not supposed to have any more kids, so I figure hysterectomy will get rid of my awful periods, provide the best contraception, and probably help me retain more nutrients and energy instead of losing those through menses.

My surgery is in Feb. and I'm in Canada, so it took MONTHS for the surgeons to coordinate. It would have been way faster if I did the surgeries separate.

Are you in Canada too?

Yes I am in Canada. New Brunswick. Normally I would wait longer than I am. We are aiming for end of March. My resection is considered urgent. My hysterectomy is as well due to the the very fast return of precancer cells. So they believe they can get it all done at once and that quickly. If I miss the end of March I have to wait until the first of May. We have to have it at the end of my 6 weeks of remicade.

Keep me updated on how you are doing. I will keep you in my prayers and thoughts. I so understand your being overwhelmed.
