Hello everyone!!
I can't describe how moving it is to see all of these posts, I am only sorry I didn't come on earlier to assure everyone I am ok.
Honestly, you are all so wonderful for your concern! I feel like I have a thousand friends out there looking out for me...
I am safe, and dry, and consider myself to be one of the lucky ones. 70% of the state (and its a huge state!) has been declared a disaster zone. I work at the gallery of modern art, and we are located right on the river. On Tuesday morning (my second day back at work after christmas holidays), we went from whingeing about the never-ending rain, to freaking about the weather predictions. Toowoomba had been so badly hit and we knew the King Tide and the release of the brimming dams would bring trouble. I can see the brisbane river from my office window - we're only about 10 metres from the water. As the morning went on it rose and rose, each time we stood up it was higher - there were matresses, debris and even a cow floated past at one stage.
All of the government buildings in the city were evacuated around midday... the suburbs around us were being evacuated so I left work at 3:30, the bus I rode home had only 4 people on it (usually packed).
I am lucky to live on the southside (I live here because the rent is cheap!) - I was considering moving to west end a few months ago and boy I'm glad I didn't! The Art Gallery was flooded - in preparation they moved all of the art work from the lower levels to higher floors. I haven't been back to work since Tuesday - we will be closed to the public for a couple of weeks (which makes sense, in any case people are going to be too busy cleaning to want to go to a gallery) ... and I'm not sure when staff are returning, perhaps Monday.
Luckily my friends are all safe. My sister lives right next to the SouthBank fake beach - just metres from the water. Luckily she is in a 2nd floor apartment located above SouthBank restaraunts. Her building was evacuated but she and her partner decided to stay... they went to the council and picked up some sandbags, bought a generator and food, ice etc, candles... and are happy, and lucky, with the outcome. Still no power in their place but they're keeping their spirits high and are very well prepared. I hope to go and pull my sister out for a break from it all tomorrow.
thank you again, so so much for your love and concern... I'm only sorry I didn't get on earlier to put everyone's minds at rest. Phone lines and internet have all been dropping out constantly. Its very surreal and I've been really anxious for the last few days, the smallest thing upsets me and I don't know why... yesterday I was on empty and all the fuel bowsers were completely empty. Panic has really set in at the shops - even here away from the flood zone, water and bread have sold out. I am just so lucky to have escaped the devastation; its heartbreaking watching it on TV. Our Premier is doing such a fantastic job! She does describe it as a 'post-war' clean up effort, its going to be tough.
Andorable - please please let me know if there is anything I can do for your family. If they are in need of anything, cleaning etc - please let me know. You are in my thoughts.
Love to you all,
Phoebe
