Hi, new to the site just wanted to get some advice. I am having a partial bowel obstuction and having intense pain, my plan is to avoid going to the hospital and sticking to a liqid diet and waiting it out. Iv done this in the past but after much reading is this dangerous?

How do you know it is partial, not complete obstruction? I think if the pain lasts too long and you throw up a lot, you'd better call your doctor to be safe. I am not an expert on bowel obstruction. But I posted a poll a while ago on bowel obstruction, see below.

I have to admit I think considering at the very least speaking with a doctor would be a good idea.

If it's a real bowel obstruction, you would know, the pain is rerally intense, and you could perforate, that is dangerous. I've had 1 that surgery to remove 8ft of disease and obstruction, in small bowel. then I've had resection surgery, that was elective or I would have had OBS. so dr's and myself said yes I needed another foot removed to avoid OBS> but what I get is, I call them gas blockage, nothing goes thru, resected site is inflammed, and it is a blockage, bad cramps, comes in waves, when bad it seems like every 45 seconds. lasts anywhere from 2-12 hr's. I take pain med's, have to. as soon as gas starts to pass, then I know I'll be alright, for me the pain med's can help in breaking up gas. wow, well good luck i hope for you it's just gas type blockage, and not diseaesed gut.

If you have a partial obstruction, which means you're still moving gas and such, then going on
a fluid only diet will help. BUT, if your pain becomes unbearable, you have no bowel sounds (not
moving gas or any feces) or you start vomiting and it looks and smell really nasty (fecal fluid)
Please seek medical attention immediately. I've been through several of these, and if you get
attention quick enough, they can treat you with IV meds and NG tubes. It takes at least a 5 day
stay in the hospital, but it does work. Both of my surgeries were done to remove inflamed, ulcerated
intestine, and not obstructions.

One other symptom to mention would be lots of distention, which goes along with not moving gas.

Had about 6 of these on 2010, pain every day then it will go away. If you have as many of these you will realize that you can't go on like this, even if it passes with a liquid diet (chicken broth did it for me). On September 2010 I could not go on, had 4 feet of intestine removed, its been great every since.

As written before, obstructions can create fistulas, if you have a fever and it nothing is passing through, you are in the edge of the cliff so when things are passing through consider an Upper GI Xray to see the extent of the obstruction.

My previous GI wanted to do a colonoscopy (had one 18 months earlier), with is total BS since the scope cannot reach that far up...GI doctors make lots of money with colonoscopies, the XRays is not profitable for them.

I would definitely at least let your doctor know. Maybe they can prescribe you a steroid to reduce inflammation. I had a bowel obstruction once and it sucked a lot. I was in the hospital for 4 days, and had an ng tube in for a while. Having a tube shoved into your nose and down into your stomach is an experience I suggest avoiding at all costs. I had five partial bowel obstructions in a two month period several years ago and they are not fun at all.  I know I wouldn't fool around and try to wait it out.  I headed for the hospital when things were not passing through and the vomiting started.  It can be a dangerous situation.

 

The NG tube is not fun and had to have it put in all five times!  I have a deviated septum on top of things.  BUT my doctors used a pediatric NG tube on me and it was far more comfortable.  I didn't even think about them having something like that so this might be something to remember if you ever have to have an NG tube put in.
