Ideas for pain at night please

I was wondering if anyone has any tips for pain at night.  I have my Pain pills but if Itake them any later than 7 pm I can forget about sleep until at least 3am...I tried some hot tea already and a heating pad.  i did also try a hyomax..still no help.  I dont know what is worse the fact of this pain keeping me up or the pain pills taking a little edge off but again still not sleeping.

I have the same problem w/ pain meds some of the time. If I break my pill in half it'll take the edge off w/o giving me that buzzing awakeness shocked ....then if I'm still hurting after a couple of hrs I'll take the other half. Not a perfect solution but it can work every now and then...

I have the same problem. I opt to take the pill and sometimes I fall asleep in the chair watching tv. I know it's not what you wanted to hear but there are more of us not sleeping too.

Me too. Can't take pain meds after 6pm or I won't sleep. Really stinks right now since I have a partial blockage that is getting worse by the day and sleep is hard anyway. A little relief would be great, but I don't have any great insight for you other than heat. That always makes me feel a little better.

This may be frowned upon by the medical community, but I take two Benadryl at night to help me sleep. I don't take anything for pain for my Crohn's and rely on my heating pad, but the Benadryl (on those bad nights) really help me fall asleep faster, so the pain isn't noticeable. Have you talked to your doctor about taking something that will help with pain and help you sleep? (I know for me, Vicodin knocks me out!)

Debra, my Gi recommended taking Benadryl to help me sleep when I was Prednisone, because I couldn't sleep. Didn't help me sleep through the night but definitely helped me fall asleep and get some sleep.

If I have to take pain med's at night, take it with sleeping med or anxiety med. certain anxiety meds won't work with certain pain med's, so You have to have right combo.also if I'm really bloated and gas won't come out, I take 1/2 pain med or whole, and within 10 minutes the gas starts breaking up, and I'm able to get rid of it(fart away)

I do take benadryl nightly it is either that or I wake up choking with severe post nasal drip due to severe hay fever I also have food allergies (like pbutter) and yes ppl in the house still eat it but try to be careful around me as far as cleaning the utensils used etc but I think things even like the odor is triggering my asthma. Sometimes I even wake up choking even with the benadryl so it is time for more

Try changing the type of pain meds you are on and see if doctor will prescribe something else. Codeine allows me to sleep when I can but Tramadol only lets me drift rather than sleep. But if I take both together then that seems to let me have some sleep.

i have percocets and they sometimes make me tired. they definitely do not keep me up. i usully lay in bed with a heating pad and the pain meds...i still wake up almost every night in pain and have to take more percs...sucks. sorry you're dealing with it also! i wish i had better solutions for you (and me)...

Percoset is what I have now...and about codeine and myself well my mother told me a story from when I was little and in a car seat...lets just say the energy the meds gave me allowed me to get out of my car seat and hang out the car window. I am allergic to morphine, oxycontin doesnt stay in me long enough dilaudid does the same as percoset (and vicodin for that matter) Darvocet same thing..Tramadol was so long ago a RA doc tried me on them for my joint pain if I recall she gave me 2 weeks of it and it didnt help or do much of anything I think I am just screwed I think I have to chose the better of 2 evils sadly glad this isnt a nightly occurance with me but some nights it Sucks much worse than others

I use Benadryl also, it helps me to fall asleep, but sometimes I still wake up in pain in the middle of the night. If I really want a good night's sleep, I take Ambien CR. It knocks me out for 9 hours, so I have to plan ahead if I want to take it. If I try to do anything before the 9 hours are up, there's no telling what I might do - lol! It definitely makes me loopy, sometimes I think I dreamed I did something, then realize, maybe I actually did it in real life (like go to the bathroom, nothing exciting!).

If you can't get a script for Ambien, then another drug that worked for me was Trazadone. I think it is an anti-anxiety/anti-depressant, very old. But it really knocked me out.

Just a warning, if you do use a heating pad, make sure it has an automatic shut-off. I had an old one that I used 2 years ago, and left it on my abdomen all night when I was in alot of pain, and woke up with a 2nd degree burn (thru clothes and the heating pad cover). I didn't feel it because the nerves are severed in that part of my abdomen because of so many surgeries.
