Can anyone tell me if instant vanilla pudding mix would be the same as a vanilla panacotta mix? Found a rather scrummy american pudding recipe which requires instant pudding mix but all I can find here in UK is Panacotta mix-help!!

Panacotta mix would probably work--IF it was "instant," like the required American pudding. Instant pudding means that it requires no cooking at all: just mix in the milk, stir it all up, and place it in the refrigerator, where it thickens into pudding. If the panacotta mix requires cooking, it probably won't work in the recipe that you have.

Thank you:) That knocks the panacotta out. I guess our equivalent would be something like Angels Delight. It is worth a shot!

lol I feel bad hijacking the forum with this. Basically it is a sweet buttery pecan mix spooned into a pastry base(or pie crust as they call it in US)vanilla pudding is then added on top and then a mix of vanilla pudding and cream put on top of that and then garnished with pecans(drooling already) I think pannacotta has gelatine in so would prob set and would be unable to add cream at final stage, custard could be a possible option although would have to be cooked and cooled(but wouldn't set solid) Angel delight you just add milk to it and whisk(sets quite solid and could add cream to(I think) I just don't know what typical vanilla pudding tastes like so I am not quite sure what to substitute it with.

Hope you start to feel a bit more with it soon Ivy and that your piggies are still giving you pleasure.

I'd be more inclined to try blancmange, myself. Another thing you could try is a German product called Dr Oetker. It's ages since I've had any, bit it might be worth trying...

This might be better, though I don't know if you can get it into the UK. Could be good for your son too - they used to give this to me in hospital, before I developed an intolerance to dairy.

Thanks Ivy-somethings Crohn's related that I have just found out, Sustagen is also marketed as Boost(in UK and US) We do have Dr Oetker products here(but not this particular product in any of my local supermarkets)I think I am just going to have to make 3 or 4 pies and try with custard, blancmange, angel delight etc and see what works lol. Anyone whant to be my food guinea pig, so to speak!

Yum. Although we're New Orleanians, we spent three years in London--and loved loved loved Angel Delight! And you're right--that might work.

ooh I love Angel delight and virtually live off it when I flare! Its like an instant mousse but is really light and fluffy, the butterscotch and banana flavours are my favourite!

ditto as lilcrohnie says. It is a dry powder mix bought in a sachet that you mix with milk(either whisk or shake) and it firms up into an instant creamy mousse(typical flavours strawberry, banana, choc, butterscotch and vanilla) a lot of stores here(like Tescos, Somerfield etc) do 'home brands' too which are just as good and cheaper :)
