Travelling in a plane with Humira

Hello All,

I will be flying by plane for 9 hours, and wait time 3 hours so total travel time 12 hours from start to finish with humira pen and how to keep it cool between 2deg and 8 dec.    I have a insulated bag and can put a couple of ice packs in the bag, but I am concerned about the ice melting ruining the humira.

Has anyone experienced travelling by plane for a length of time while carrying humira?

Have you contacted the airline and asked if the the crew can refrigerate your Humira in the cooler on the airplane? My BIL used to take the insulin that needed to be refrigerated. The airlines were very cooperative about putting it in the onboard refrigerator. Aslo, I know my Humira came in a kit that included freezer packs and a carrying container. It was supposed to keep the Humira at the proper temperature for ?? hours. Can't recall the time because it has been several years since I took Humira.

I am also interested in what others say about taking the pens through security. I plan on traveling and will be needing my Simponi while gone. It is a autoinjector syringe that needs to be kept chilled.

When I was on Humira and had to travel I would use the ice packs that my Humira was shipped with. They were 24 - 48 hr ice packs so if you have a couple in a small cooler you should be fine for 12 hours. When I would travel home for the weekend and leave straight from work, I would pack my Humira at 7 am, I would be at work all day and have a 4 hour drive home and it was always fine, my ice pack was only about 1/2 thawed by 8 pm.

There is a cooler called the polar bear cooler that does a spectacular job of keeping things cool. My husband and I traveled to India with VSL3 in this cooler, and when we landed well over 24 hours later, it was still at 43 degrees. We used those blue ice blocks, and we had to get clearance from the airline, and we had to explain to TSA what it was and show them our doctor's note.

When I traveled with my Humira I didnt use ice I used Ice packs that they use to ship meds with (also used the gel type ones since they at the time anyway had to fit in the quart size zip top bags. When going through San Fran airport they did give me some issues about my med cooler..once saying it was extra luggage (only meds with script labels ...yes I had all my meds in there would take up too much suitcase room) then the scanners had issues with the ice packs). Luckily on the way back when we had our flights cancelled etc I was already dine with the humira I had taken with me for 2 weeks of vacation (i use 1 per week)

Oh I just read te post about the pens, I dont know about those since I use the syringest but I had the boxes with labels with me and I have traveled with an epi pen before as well...which I too was concerned oof thinking the warning on it is if you are not in need of it that it can cause cardiac arrest..fearing the potential side effect I feared bringing it on but I am allergic to things suck as peanuts and other food allergies so I cannot risk it

I have traveled a few times with my pen. They didn't bother me one bit about it either time. I forgot to tell the security person the first time about it but they didn't mention a thing and the second time I told them and he said no big deal. They didn't look at my note from the doctor or anything.

As far as keeping it cold I just used the ice pack. There was no problems with that at all either.

Thank you all so very much for all your info on how you travelled with an ice pack with humira and meds.

I got the larger blue ice pack, got a note from the pharmacy and I did not have an issue at the airport.

I was concerned about the temp. for the humira as it needed to be between 2 and 8 deg C.  It was ok, so now I do feel comfortable with the blue ice pack staying frozen for quite sometime.

When checking in for our flight, I asked Air Canada if it would be possible to keep my humira in their fridge and they informed me that  Air Canada does not have fridges on their planes any longer.  They keep their food cold by coolers.

Make sure you put it in a ziplock bag. keep the moisture out.
