there are no 60 yr olds with cd?

In the last year my gi man decided we needed to try new medications. I was on remicade for 3 yrs and doing great, but I have no veins and need a picc line and he grew wary of the line. I had bad reactions to all of them. During several visits, he kept trying to assure me the latest school of thought is people who were diagnosed with CD when they were younger seems to have the disease "burn itself out" by the time they are in their 60's. I told him that would be great but I am 47! Has anyone else heard this latest pearl?

There are 60 year olds on this board with Crohn's disease. Why does your doctor not put in a port? Many of us here have very bad veins and need ports. As for the burning out stuff, this disease does not go away or burn out. It can go into remission but not burn out just cause one is older.Good luck with your disease but I would consider getting a second opinion from a different G.I. if I ever got advice like that from my G.I.

I'm 63 and still have the disease (as far as I know). I'm still on 6MP daily. There's currently no trace of inflammation or strictures in my system, though, and my new (and excellent) doctor says that therefore the crippling diarrhea I've suffered for a dozen years is strictly the result of (a) my gallbladder removal, unnecessarily, 16 years ago, and (b) the resection of my terminal ileum in 1999. With cholestyramine (in about a quarter of the daily manufacturer's recommendation), I haven't had to make a desperate run for a bathroom in 6 weeks, an incredible change for me. So I guess I neither prove nor disprove your doctor's theory--and I'm afraid to stop taking 6MP to find out!

I think your gi is burned out, thats quite a statement to make. I have had this for 40yr's. since 19, i'm the burnout 60. Not burned out yet, I'm burned out.

I have a 50ish relative who had a resection more than 15 years ago, then gallbladder about 10 years after that. Hasn't had a sign of CD since the resection, no d after gallbladder, no restrictions on diet, and only on pentasa.

It gives me hope.

My hubby is 64 and had Crohn's since he was 29 years old.............not burning itself out.  Has had 4 resections (last on in February 2010). He also has Crohn' arthritis which is nasty for him and very painful.

I will let you know...I will turn 60 in August!  I went undiagnosed with symptoms beginning in 1979.  In 1998 I ended up in the hospital with a blockage and that's when they discovered I had Crohn's.  I'm doing well, but am reminded everyday that it hasn't burned itself out. 

The first doctor to diagnose me (in 1982) said I had U/C. He told me he didn't see any old people with this disease. I never asked if he meant I would die young or that the disease would go away. I am 50 now and the CD is not showing any sign of going away!?
