Safe Painkillers for Crohn's

Hi,

My back went out and I am in pretty bad pain.  Does anyone know of a painkiller that is safe to take with Crohn's?  I have taken things in the past that has bothered my Crohn's, so I don't want to change one pain for another!

I guess it depends on what you've already tried, and whether you mean OTC meds or prescription.
I take Vicodin with very few problems!!

Many members take anything from Vicodin and Percocet to Tramadol. Just remember no NSAIDS (i.e. Motrin, Aleve, Aspirin) type meds. Hugs!

I take co-codamol, tramadol (with ondanestron) and codeine on it's own. Not all at same time, tramadol is for when my neck injury (6 displaced discs) is really bad and take ondanstron to stop the nausea feeling. Co-codamol every day in morning and evening and codeine in afternoon so don't have too much paracetamol. All have been fine with CD, if you have trapped nerve in your back then rec diazepan/tamasepan, not sure spelt those correctly as they will relax the muscles and again didn't effect my CD.

I'm currently taking Percocet for my joint pain and it works wonderfully, with no adverse side effects to my stomach. My GI doctor told me today that there's not that much evidence that advil isn't ok with Crohn's, but she seemed very upset when she saw I was taking the Percocet (it was prescribed by my primary) so I think she's just one of the doctors who hates any opiod painkiller. I'd try and get Percocet or Vicodin, I see no reason to be forced to upset your stomach to help your back pain.

Also just fyi, GI's are notorious for not prescribing pain meds. I like Gaius have to get mine from my family doc. Good luck!

gail, you were reading my mind, it's because were both in san diego. gi's are horrible for pain med's. that is one thing that blows my mind. I use vic's 7.5 and I take temasapam as well. both are great for cd.

Oh, the pain med situation is bad everywhere. they have pill mills in Florida and pain killer clinics. I take 1/2 a loritab or tramadol. I was worried that tramadol upset my stomach but I think I am ok with it. While I am in remission and didn't have a bad bleeding problem, it was sporadic, I do try to stay away from advil. It's not good for us for many reasons like BP or kidneys.

I was taking Tramadol but recently switched to Hydrocodone.  Both are for arthritis and haven't seemed to do much for either that or the stomach pains.  Both can cause constipation also, which is bad when I already have that problem!

Have you asked your GI for a referral to a pain clinic? My GI doctor was fine writing scripts for percocet, at one point I was on oxycodone but after several months he referred me to a local pain clinic. Best support ever! They had me on a fentanyl patch which was great because it is slow release and absorbed through the skin so far less chance of stomach upset. It can be fairly addictive which is why pain clinics usually administer the drug and track your usage, but I had no problems tapering off. The first few days I was really tired but the clinic worked with me to get the dosages right and after a week or so I was able to function in a normal capacity. It was a life saver for me though, I didn't have the pain fluctuations like I did when I was in a lull between my percocet dosages.

I would say to be very careful though of the Fentanyl that reedee3 mentioned. It is the strongest pain med out there, and reedee3 is right it is highly addictive. I had to have surgery on my liver in 2005, and they put me on these patches. I had the worse withdrawals ever, and that was working with a pain clinic. I have told my docs to never prescribe that longer than a day or two ever again. Hugs and JMHO!!
