fustrated with pain medication

Seem to be having a flare and have pain....especially in the evening. Do I take the vicadin that makes me nauseous or the percocet that gives me an intense headache???? The vicadin only takes the edge off but I get sick if I don't eat with it - which eating is the last thing I want to do. The percocet takes away the pain but is an intense headache worth it? Does anyone else have these problems with these medications?

My hydrocodone (vicodin) used to always make me nauseous, but now 7 yrs later it doesn't bother me so much. If I try to take it and stay active I get nauseous but if I take it when I can let myself lay down and rest it doesn't bother me so much. In the beginning I would take phenergan with it for the nausea. There's a good number of different pain meds out there and your doc can adjust the dosing which may help. My fall back fix as I'm in my seemingly never ending flare is to stick with liquids (I love Odwalla and Naked juices/ smoothies) when the pain is high and if I have to take my pain meds to get through work or something active (I teach and perform also) I'll take half a pill wait an hour then take the other half so the side effects don't slam me. Then when I get home I'll take a whole pill and lay down. For me the headache is never worth it as I've taken to getting severe migraines I never know how bad the headache will get. In my years w/ this oh so awesome disease I've learned to see how much I can get away with NOT eating so that I can manage my pain and nausea better...not a trick I'm proud of lol. I hope you find a good balancing act soon...I vote you put your doc to work on finding you something new... ~pixi

Percoset gives me headaches too and makes me feel really loopy. I'm taking ultracet right now (which is a tramadol/tylenol mix) and it seems to work well with no side effects. Sorry your suffering :(

I would keep to the Vicodin with a small snack, like crackers or a little toast. I suffer with migraines
so I wouldn't want to go down the headache road. Good luck!!

I think lilpixistar has the right idea. Both those meds make me nauseous too. I always take 4 mg Zofran at least when I use my pain meds. I also do as she does and will take 1/2 then wait a bit and take the other half. Give that a try and see if it helps. Hugs!

I have been told that taking fish oil prior to the vicodin helps.

I forgot to mention that I do have phenegren - but it knocks me out. But the vicodin/phenogren mix is great at bedtime. It's just hard during to day because i can't take the phengren. I am not a pain medication person. I only take it as a last resort - I am terrified to have to need it constantly. So this is new to me.

That's understandable... I was really worried about depending on them too much especially since I have a lot of addicts in my family. So far, 7 yrs in and no dependency or addiction. I do find that if I take them as they're prescribed 1-2 every 6hrs then my body will get 'addicted' and I have insomnia that gets taken care of within a week after I get to stop taking them. I've only taken them at that dose when my abscess was being packed and drained...ouch! smhair Now I take maybe one during my day and maybe one at night if necessary and I only take 2 at a time if I'm trying to save myself a trip to the ER. On good months I rarely use them bad months I'll take them more often. No craziness from pain meds so far.
I'm glad you at least get some relief with the combo at night... If you do try the half dosing let me know how it goes...
Also, try not to worry too much this disease is PAINFUL it's OK to take some of that pain away if you can...
