I had a right inguinal hernia repair in 2008. Mine was asymptomatic, yet I decided to have the surgery because the hernia would never improve on it's own, and there was always that very small chance of an emergency. I was scared to do it and almost canceled my surgery the night before. Even in just the last 2 years there have been great improvements in the mesh-plug materials used. It is the most common outpatient surgery in the world, VERY safe. Of course there are possible complications with any surgery that you will talk to your doctor about. Mine was done at Rush University's Medical Center in Chicago. The surgeon had about 15 students watching my surgery. I remember nothing but was told it was done in 25 minutes! I felt great that day. I had a lot of pain at the incision site for about 8-10 days but it eventually went away. I don't have any discomfort at all now, sometimes I can feel the pressure of the mesh though. I did not have any Crohn's related problems. Better to take care of it while your body is younger vs. older in my opinion. Good luck!
