Hello - I am new to this site and am not sure if I am in right area. I have had occasional constipation and abdominal pain for years but medical workup always came back as "probable ruptured ovarian cyst." The pain and constipation became much worse at the beginning of February 2011. A colonoscopy revealed a narrowing in my sigmoid colon and I was referred to a colorectal surgeon. The plan was for outpatient workup; however, on 02/23/11, I had severe pain and ended up with an emergency colectomy with an ileostomy on 02/24/11. The diagnosis was a congenital defect with malrotation of the sigmoid colon. The bowel was found to be necrotic at the time of surgery.
I am feeling great right now and have a reversal of my ileostomy scheduled for 04/13/11. I didn't have time to be nervous about the first surgery, but I am pretty scared right now. The skin around my stoma is red and itchy despite barrier spray and using the crusting technique. I am afraid that this will be a problem during surgery. I am also curious to hear from other people about the time frame to resume an active lifestyle...playing golf, tennis, travel, work, etc. It sounds like I may be pretty tied to the bathroom. I am trying to come up with a list of questions (like Immodium or Metamucil use) for my surgeon. Any input would be greaty appreciated.
