I guess like most of you I take a look at the new posts and today I clicked on the one by Gaius and my security sytem was flashing up warnings and wouldn't let me proceed!!

Interesting. about 10 minutes ago now I attempted to enter this forum and my AVG brought up a notice of having blocked a "virus". I don't remember the exact description except:

"protectwinscanner.com/index"......

I had to exit out of explorer and re-enter. Coincidence?????

I had the same thing happen yesterday at the UC forum.  I had a fake AVG security warning that had identified trojans with a "click here' to remove.  The "click here" was a link to an .exe file to download the virus to my computer!  I couldn't close the link so I had to do what you did, close explorer and re-enter (after checking to see if any files were downloaded onto my computer). 

I am now having a problem with backing out of threads.  Going back only refreshes the page.

Yeah, I had that same problem backing out of pages.  Still am for that matter.

This sounds like something Peter needs to know about, and soon, so I have sent him an alert. With luck he should be here soon to look into and - I hope - fix the problem.

I am not having problems on Safari (yet). Perhaps you could change browsers?

Seems like a similar thing has happened to a few of us-I can't remember exactly what was said-I believe it was something like infected page or thread and not safe to proceed.

I had it happen last night to me - tried to click on something and there was a virus inbedded somewhere. Had to go into task manager and close out of all my pages and start over.

A browser that came already-installed on my Mac :-)

I've asked some of the other mods if they think there is a virus implanted in HW, as I'm not computer-savvy enough to know myself, but haven't had any feedback yet. If they think there is, we may be able to raise Peter more quickly than usual to fix it.

Feedback from one of our wonderful computer guru mods:

If anyone is still having problems in a few hours time, could they please post about it here? Our guru mod says that she suspects the problem is linked to an advertisement that is being shown here on the forum, and that sometimes the advertisers discover & fix programming problems on their own, without our intervention.

That said, if anyone is still having problems two hours from now, could they please post about it here, and continue to post as they experience issues. The longer the problem persists, the less likely it is that the advertisers are going to fix it on their own, and the more justification we have to disturb Peter on his weekend and ask him to investigate the problem.

Hope this helps... and thanks to lovely Lynnwood, who provided the advice.

Those pop-up security warnings are usually ads embedded in advertising running on a page, whether here or on a different site. If it is not the security program you run on your computer, NEVER click on those. Simply close them. I run a good pop-up ad blocker and rarely see them. I have never seen one here.

I know that people have reported 'pop up' adverts here before but I have never had any of those, just that one incidence of 'not safe to proceed'(so far)

Same thing happened to me yesterday!  I wonder if the server for healingwell got infiltrated somehow.  So glad I was paying attention and did not download that executable file.

I have not had any trouble at all. Just an FYI for anyone who is interested. A few years ago, everyone in our house was getting computer viruses and we were crashing left and right. My husband did some research and found Mozilla Firefox. We use that as our browser instead of Explorer. The theory is that most viruses are written for Explorer because that is the browser that 95% of people use. Mozilla Firefox works exactly the same and we have had NO issues since making the switch. Its a free download. Just putting it out there for you to look at as an option.

I haven't seen anything and I second Zanne's suggestion for Firefox. There's a nice little add-on called "No scripts." It's a PAIN in the butt to have to add every script you want to view from every page, but I haven't seen a pop-up or an ad for months! Everything is blocked.

I have done a scan, there are no vulnerabilities on HW itself. Some ads may cause issues, but those are usually vetted well. If you see a problem, please send me the URL and a screenshot of the issue.
