Hey everyone, I've lived in NW Ohio my whole life... so it's been about 25 years, and I think it's time for a change! I went to the Chicago area for Spring break and I absolutely loved it over there. I'm ready to pack it up and look for a place in or around Chicago just as soon as I find an engineering position over there, Lord knows I'm not going to find one here. It will be my first time moving more than 30 minutes away from my family which I don't think will really bother me, but I'm not sure how things with Crohn's will work.

I'm on Humira at the moment, and I was wondering if there's any way to figure out if my future benefits will cover Humira? If my new insurance plan won't cover it, what can I do about it? Is it possible to stay on my parents plan even though I live out of state? I thought about just taking the train home every so often to get the shots, but it's about $100 for a round trip from Chicago to Sandusky. I really don't know how to make this transition go smoothly, but I will not let Crohn's keep me from doing what I think I need to do! Any advice from people who moved to new areas with a current prescription to worry about?

If you are moving for a new job and it has health insurance you will need to find out from the HR Dept what is covered and what isn't. You can't be denied because of a pre-existing condition as long as you haven't gone with out insurance (no gap), but a lot of companies have waiting periods before ANY health benefits kick in. Usually something like 30 days. If your new job doesn't have health insurance then I am not sure what your options are. And by the way, great attitude. Don't let CD stop you, there is always a way to do what you want!

I just moved last August...from MI to KY. I am on my husband's insurance and it was a transfer so he is with the same company, thus the same insurance. It was flawless as far as insurance goes. I was able to keep right on track with my remicade infusions. Definitely contact the new company and see when your benefits will kick in. Until you get a new job, and everything straightened out, I would keep my address and insurance the same, that way if you have a waiting period for your new insurance you can travel for that month or two. Good luck! I LOVE Chicago!!! When we lived in MI, we would take Amtrak all the time and spend the weekend in the Windy City!

You might want to ask your doctor was his/her advice is, that is what I did when I moved from NY to VA. Fortunatlely for me, when I got down here one of the first people I met had a sister with Crohn's and that is how I came across my GI.

Thanks for the advice! My family isn't really supportive of my ambitions to move to such a large area, but I feel like I'm trapping myself by staying in such a small area. I guess I will just have to go for it in order to find out if it was a mistake or not!

You can stay on your parents plan until you are 26.
