Other's posts and post comments have been helpful in the past, so I thought I'd pose a concern I am facing now. I am trying to stabilize after a flare-up of my disease which started about
2.5 months ago. I was on prednisone for four weeks (plus Pentasa), which helped tremendously, and after a week of finishing the last dose, I felt like my symptoms were returning. My disease has been diagnosed as "moderately" active, according to the pathology reports, and I would classify my symptoms, also as moderate. I don't have to use the bathroom 10 times a day, maybe 2-3 times a day, nor am I constipated, but I do have pain before my bowel movements, and I do feel pain in my abdomen throughout the day, diarrhea, other symptoms, etc. etc.
Tolerable pain at times, sometimes excruciating pain, uncomfortable sometimes at work, but still eating, exercising and not deathly ill... Well, my GI put me on entocort now, in addition to the pentasa, but now he is adding the 6MP. I am supposed to start on Friday, blood test tomorrow. I know this is a good drug, and other people have posted that this drug has worked wonders on them. However, I feel the drug is pretty toxic, strong, as it is FDA-approved to treat acute leukemia. My concern is, I feel like I want to let my system stabilize just on the entocort and pentasa, and postpone treatment with 6-MP.
I don't think I'm sick enough for this type of drug. I imagine this drug should be used for people who are really ill, and like I said, I don't feel good all the time, but I still have an appetite (in fact overweight right now), still exercise, and feel good when my symptoms are not actively bugging me.
Am I sick enough to start 6-MP?? HELP!
