Can you substitute probiotic pills for natural home made yogurt and get the same benefit?
The reason I ask is because my son (who is away at college), is addicted to his home made yogurt to the point where he consumes 5 or more quarts of yogurt a week. It wouldn't be bad if he made the yogurt from non fat milk, but he makes it from heavy cream because it tastes better. In turn, his cholesteral is 270 and he is 20 lbs over weight.
Some history. My son was diagnosed with server crohns when he was younger and with a couple of rectal fistulas. He was put on pentasa , but at the same time, we also started him on the SCD diet, just to try something different. After about a year, he was in complete remission, and both fistuals had healed. He still remains symptom free to this day. When he went to college, he decided, on his own, to stop taking pentasa. I didn't like it, and I have argued with him until I am blue in the face, but what can I do, I can't force him to take it.
Anyway, he still follows the SCD diet at college, which really amazes me how he does it, but he seems to do it. Some times I think he takes this SCD to far because of his addiction to his yogurt. He even took his yogurt maker with him to school. When he was at home, we only gave him one cup of yogurt a day, now from what he tells me, he eats 3 to 4 cups of his home made yogurt a day.
My concern is if he does not cut back on the yogurt, he will gum up his arteries with cholesteral. I keep telling him to cut back, but he seems to think it is the yogurt that keeps him in remission, and if he stops or reduces eating it, his D and fistuals will return. He is really obsessed with this SCD diet, and obsessed with good and bad bacteria in the gut. He seems to think the yogurt is the key to his success. I try telling him to substitute probiotic pills because it will do the same without the risk of cholesterol, but he is adamant that the probiotics is not the same. Can you SCDers give me some advice?
