Does anyone know if it is ok to use the tanning bed while on remicade? I've looked online and i found something that said to avoid tanning if you are on remicade for psoriasis. ??

You def should avoid tanning especially in beds while on remicade. ITs all a numbers game, sure there might be someone who tanned for 10 years on remicade, but then there is someone else who did that and got cancer, im sure.

This is coming from someone who tanned from the time I was 18-25 non stop in beds. IM 30 now. I was on imuran for 2 years tanning in beds weekly 22-25. Hope that doesnt catch up with me on top of already spending 7 years too many being tanned 365. 2 of them on some serious meds that are linked to several cancers. Becareful. Maybe just wear screen and a little natural sun outside, get a little color but try not to get that full on tan. ITs all numbers game tanning. Even if your not on meds. But being on such meds increase these risks for us. KInda like smoking you know... it coulda kill ya but a lot people do it, and dont get killed from it. Then though there are teh thousands who are not so lucky in the statistics

Hey I am on Remicade too, and I would say to avoid tanning if possible. Do you have access to spray tan instead? I have read a few articles about Remicade causing photo-sensitivity so that would probably be not fun! I actually broke out in a heat rash (which I have NEVER had before) after spending 15 minutes on my sun deck.

Plus, since Remicade already increases the chances of lymphoma, and tanning increases your chances of Melanoma, and those are actually pretty closely related, (metastasizing) and then add in whatever other meds you take, it probably is not worth the risk shakehead

The thing about psoriasis is confusing, I know people actually use UV beds to get rid of psoriasis, but I am not sure of Remicade and what the answer is with that one.

Hope you can find a better alternative, even though it kinda sucks having to, especially if you are trying to build a tan for a vacation or summer! Good luck! smilewinkgrin

I'll show my age a little here but when I was young we didn't have sun screen,we had what was called tanning lotion. Now you would call it cooking oil because we fried in it . Yep we got tan but now we have skin cancer spots burned off all the time . There is nothing wrong with ,NOT, being tan . Save your skin while you can and it wone come back to bite you in the butt when your older .

I agree with Sniper here. I have always been fair skinned and burned easily. I was using tanning beds for about 2-4 years about 10 years ago. I was on just Asacol but the damage the bed did to my skin, ugh!!

I use a tanning gel now I buy at Walmart. Its by Loreal and it works great. I use it everyday until I get to the color I want, and then switch to every few days after that. Plus I just had a skin cancer removed from my hand and it was a squalmous cell cancer. So I agree save your skin and use a self tanner instead. They are so much better now than they use to be. Very natural color. I got the idea from some girls I work with and wondered how they got so brown, and not one of them was from laying out but from self tanners. Hugs!

I am on both Remicade and Methotrexate and have fair skin and blue eyes. I use tanning beds and also tan in the sun without a problem and have been doing so for over 20 years.

Tanning beds are really bad for your skin. In addition to the risk of skin cancer it will age your skin and make you look much older, much sooner. My two cents

I am a pale blue eyed blond hair gal. in my teen years I was tanning in the sun and in beds. then when I was 17 I developed vitiligo (same disease as Michael Jackson had). my skin is now speckled white and you can even tell with me being so pale, and it looks really cool in the black light :) I am now on remicade and will avoid the sun when possible. I do not care anymore for being tan, I am comfortable in my pale and colorless skin. my grandma had a chunk of her arm removed from melanoma. I would rather stay pale. tanning beds are dangerous as it is.

I've been using tanning beds on and off for over 20 years I still look 10+ years younger than I actually am. My skin is healthy. I get checked by the dermatologist yearly. He knows that I tan and is fine as long as it is in moderation.

Not worth the risk. I am 32 and had a melanoma removed at age 29. Skin cancer is scary stuff, melanoma especially. I would tell you this regardless of the the remicade. If you want me to send you a presentation on tanning and cancer I'd be happy to do so. It's scary stuff.
