Immunosuppressed and Root Canals?

So 2 years ago while swimming in the ocean in Mazatlan, I thought swimming "like a dolphin" would be a grand idea. Well that beach was called Playa Bruja (witch beach) for a reason. I went out too far, got caught in an under current, came back towards the shore, (thank god) and was literally thrown onto the beach. This resulted in actually crushing two of my molar teeth. I got crown's put on when I got back home, but now I need root canals shocked

I am on high doses of Imuran and Remicade, and I am just wondering if I am even able to get a root canal while immunosuppressed? I will for sure talk to my GI and the dentist doing the procedure, but I was just wondering if anyone has any experience with this? Thanks Everyone smilewinkgrin

I'm having a hernia repair in a few weeks and talked to my doc about it but he didn't wanna take me off my meds cause we have it controlled reasonably well... I talked to the surgeon and he said I should be alright.

I'm only on Pentasa and Imuran instead of Remicade but the Imuran did have me worried...

Yea I am worried too. Both hernia repair's and root canal's are high for chance of infection. I know you can go off the Imuran without weaning and start again, but how effective would that even be? How long does it stay in your system? hmmmm not sure if root canal is worth it, but I know that your hernia repair is probably necessary! Best of Luck :)

If you need root canals doesn't that mean you already have infection in the root canal that needs to be removed?

No, I don't have infection yet. When I lost the teeth (crushed) there was a lot of damage in the root and I lost portions of the tooth, even underneath the gumline. They are worried I will get an infection there at some point, or decay, but no infection yet.

Hi,

I always let my dentist know which meds I am taking before a procedure such as a root canal.  If she has concerns she will phone my GI.  I have had a root canal done while on Remicade and MTX.  All went well - no concerns what-so-ever.

I wouldn't change or discontinue any of your meds. With a root canal, there's a chance of a post-op infection. If your dentist has any worry about infection, he'll premedicate with you an antibiotic and give you a course to take afterwards. Though I (am a dentist) only premed a patient with uncontrolled diabetes or AIDS. There's almost no risk of severe infection from a root canal while on those medications because a root canal removes the infection. Leaving the tooth untreated, however, is much more problematic.
