Just Joined! First Resection... Help!

Hi! I have just registered here. I found this group via google.

Well, my name is Daniele and I am 35 years old. I was born extremely premature at 24 weeks and weighed 1 lb 9 oz.

Due to my prematurity, I was born blind in one eye and my entire GI system is messed up. I have been on constipation medication since birth.

After 35 yrs, my colon has practically stopped. I only have ONE bowel movement per week or, if I allow it, every 10 days or so (I believe my max was 12 days).

I only "go" on Sundays nowadays, after taking approximately 10-20 laxative pills. Needless to say, oh, the pain!  smhair I come close to vomiting because the pills give me so much nausea.

Anyhow, now that you know what has been going on, I would like to hear from fellow sufferers. I am having a resection (my 1st) in about a month or so (going for pre-ops now in August). I hope the resection will bring me relief! I can't live having to take a BOX of laxatives every week.

What may I expect from this surgery? I have read on here that they place a foley and an NG tube. Is this common practice? I have horrible GERD too (from birth) and have to sleep with mounted pillows. All my GI is messed up.

Please! Inform me. Help me. I need as much info as possible. Oh, yes, I have had 2 colonoscopies and 2 endoscopies, it's not cancer, etc. CT scans too, CT enterography, everything!

Yet my GI is simply stopping shocked

I am mostly here to get info on resection... Please!

Daniele, we really don't know enough to tell you much about a resection. A resection of what? Small intestine? Large intestine? Both? How much do they expect to resect?

I would assume given your congenital problem that it will be an open abdomen surgery so they can get the most complete look at your entire GI tract. If so the incision will probably start about an inch above your naval, run around the naval to one side or the other, probably the right, and then down to just above the pubic bone.

Holding a pillow snugly against your abdomen and walking, Walking, WALKING the hospital hallways will be your quickest way to recovery. This is to inspire your intestines to start working again, improve your breathing recovery from the anesthesia, start the rebuilding and healing of your muscles and improve your circulation, all of which hastens and improves healing.

The NG tube is usually not inserted until you are under anesthetic when you are going in for surgery. It is taken out as soon as possible but it depends on your circumstances, what they encounter during surgery, etc. Often it is taken out the afternoon of or day after surgery.

My GI appt at the Cleveland Clinic is on 8/8. This is when I'll find out more about my colon resection. I am sorry I wasn't clear. I am confused myself!

I am very anxious. I wish I could make things go faster.

I am afraid for what they will find when they go in there!

A previous CT had showed some inflammation, yet the following CT was clear.

I believe all I have is gastroparesis.

Still, I would love to have friends here! Too anxious... waiting for surgery.

No.

It'll be my 1st time at the Cleveland Clinic. New team.

Mount Sinai referred me there. They have been scratching their heads too long, lol.
