dizzy, light headed, heart pounding... Flagyl side effects?

Hi All, I have not visited this forum for years, would love some advice!

I am 7 weeks post surgical for a resection and bladder surgery because of a fistula that was communicating with my bowel,vagina, and bladder.

I developed Pyoderma around my illeostomy, the hospital thought it was a different skin infection and prescribed me Metronidazole/Flagyl and cipro. I was to take Cipro to see if it would go away, then take the flagyl if it had not cleared up in a few days. Needless to say the cipro did not look like it was working so I started taking Flagyl.

NOT GOOD! I had every adverse effect to that med listed! Dizziness, vomiting, nausea, loss of appetite, furry mouth, metalic taste... you name it. Ever since (and it's been over a week since I discontinued) I have not been able to stand, or walk more than 30 feet without feeling faint, or dizzy. I have to sit all day. I have zero energy.

Can anyone relate? I don't know if it's because I am extremely out of shape after surgery, or am I suffering from a continued side effect of the Flagyl??

Not on any meds right now, Doc has me testing for Humira in a month.

flagyl made me weak enough that i couldnt walk as my legs wouldnt work and just trying to left my arms was a chore, I also had involuntary hand movements, and nausea/vomiting. I discontinued it but it took just over a week for it all to go away.

Flagyl made me very sick but the symptoms went away after a few days once I discontinued it. Your symptoms sound more like anemia. You should contact your Dr. and let him know your symptoms so he can run labs/blood tests. I would take it very easy until you get the result

I feel sorta stronger each day, but I did not think of Anemia?? Interesting... perhaps I am low in iron??? Going to the GP on Tues, will have tests done thanks!!!

Your symptoms sound a lot like some similar ones I went to the ER with, it was determined that I was dehydrated and undergoing withdrawl from a medication that I was tapering. Just a suggestion you could also mention to your doc! :) Good luck!

Hmmm? Ok, thanks for the pointer. I am very thirsty from the illeostomy and have to take extra salt so perhaps I need to drink even more? Wonder if I can withdraw from Flagyl?

No hurt in drinking more anyways... worth a try ;)

Why do you have to take extra salt, out of curiosity? Would Gatorade help w/ fluid & sodium intake?

How long did you take Flagyl? As I understand it, the side effects are supposed to fade away after being off it for a few days...should fade pretty quickly if you weren't on it for more than a couple of weeks.

I was only on Flagyl for 4 days 3 times a day... then the doc told me to go off for 24 hours then resume. I resumed and took one and threw it up, then stopped taking them. That was one week ago. It took me 3 days just to get my appetite and colour back.

I had bad side effects with flagyl, although the drug sometimes worked very well for me. I thought of the side effects as basically sucking the joy out of life.....

But they went away after a few days off the drug, and I was on it longer than you were. I would check in w/a doc.

I got prescribed tigan for nausea to go w/the flagyl -- that helped a lot.
