Well that was interesting. about 2:00 EST our building started to shake and lights were swinging. I almost had a panic attack! How do you "veterans" of quakes not flat out panic when light fixtures are swaying? We were told if we didn't feel safe to leave, so I left -- who feels safe during an earthquake.

Glad I wasn't in the ladies room when it happened.

I live in a raised ranch house about 300 miles from Richmond, and my house really shook. I thought something ran into the house, or my big old pine tree had fallen (without making a sound - LOL!)

My daughter felt it in Lynchburg, VA (obviously) and my son felt it in Jersey City, NJ. A shared family experience! I live on the coast so the second thing I thought was Wow hurricane Irene is early - haha. If my husband hadn't texted me to see how I was after the earthquake, i would probably still be oblivious. Never crossed my mind it might be a quake.

It sounds like we dodged a bullet - no major damage anywhere.

My daughter is home for the week (Boston area). We just put her Fiance on a plane this morning to go back to Annapolis, MD. He got home and called her to tell her that all her books were on the floor, but her cat was fine. Now she is suppose to fly back on Sunday, right about the time that Irene hits. She is in a bit of a panic thinking she should change her flight. I figure the airline won't be flying if there is a hurricane on the east coast, so she will be fine.

Haha....you eastcoasters don't enjoy our ground shaking?? Its so funny as I live in Southern California and was born and bred here. Everyone thinks we have these constant earthquakes out here, but they really are fairly rare. You guys get way more tornadoes and hurricanes out there than we have earthquakes.

Earthquakes for the most part don't scare me. But....we are very close to the Mexico border and the big one that hit in Mexicali about a year or so ago, was a really big one. That one did make me a little nervous because I was sitting in my truck outside a Walmart, and what made me so nervous was that it lasted sooo long, and my truck was really rocking back and forth. But that was like a 7.3 quake. Those big ones are a little scarier. But that was the worst I have felt in my 53 years living here.

Honestly though, I am sure it was scary for you guys, as you are not used to those things. I can tell you I was visiting a daughter in Iowa about 10 years ago, and when I had barely gotten there, there was a tornado warning. Now let me tell you that scared the poop out of me. To me what was scary, was you knew it was coming. For me at least with a earthquake you don't know its coming, so you have no time to get scared. Hugs!

wow it looked quite short but scary on the TV news. Hopefully no-one was hurt.

The awful part would be not knowing at the time what was causing your building to sway - I would have thought of terrorism before earthquake if I lived in washington.

Its funny but we have had over 7400 earthquakes in Christchurch since Sept last year and only 5 and bigger actually worry me enough to go outside now. I guess you get used to them eventually but I still feel we have another big one to come before they settle down.

Me too (@Kiwi) I think we will get another big one reasonably soon - see we haven't had one for 24 hours, thats almost a record ;-)

My daughter (red zone house) has bought a section at Prebbleton right on the gap between the two main faults - the jury is out as to whether she is an idiot or optimist as we wait with baited breath for another big one ;P

hope the ongoing stess isn't having too bad an effect on your crohns kels1978 - I had to find a new specialist recently and he is trying to wean me off budesonide so I could do with it all settling down now thank you mother nature and a few more sunny days like today would be nice too :)

OK I live in Western NY state.  I always say I like it here because we only get snow.  Snow you either shovel or wait it out and no major problems.  Now within a few days of each other we have had a tornado and an earthquake rattle.  I know others are used to these things and something just over a 5.0 would be nothing, but seriously....I hate weather that you can't control!  The quake didn't scare me...just some shaking of my monitor and the light fixtures in my office building....but what's next.....just don't say a hurricane becuase those scare the living daylights out of me.

Best part...watching our media blow this out of proportion.  That is entertaining....local headlines make it sound like we were at the epicenter of it and it was Soooooooo scary.

Habs, I think NY got its last Himicane in 2002 so maybe you can rest easier . We do get earthquakes down here in La. too but sense the marsh land is like a big gob of Jello , we dont feel them much . Sorta like a large truck passing by .

Hi Kiwi, yep the stress of everything isn't helping with the Crohns I think. I have been in a flare up for some time, had my gastro appointment cancelled due to snow last week (give us a break ay!) and have just been to the doc about my ankle, as I can hardly walk on it in the morning. She has sent an urgent referral to the hospital for me to see a rheumatologist, so just waiting on both the gastro specialist and rheumatologist appointments to come through, then hopefully they will be able to get me back on track. Might be feeling better by the time spring comes around, that would be nice :) Hope things are ok with you?

Poor Kels- I really feel for you having to reschedule because of the snow - as if it isn't hard enough dealing with the ongoing quakes!

I have no lights in my kitchen at the moment as my quake damaged roof leaked thru the light sockets during the 2nd snow storm - insurance company is AMI .... say no more grrrrrr :)

I have stayed on steroids all year to avoid crohns related dramas - enough going on without adding to it ;p will be coming off them soon so suspect it will all go seriously pear shaped. My lovely gastro specialist is ill himself and my beloved GP just retired so I have been feeling a bit bereft :( the recent sun is certainly lifting spirits though isn't it.
