Prior to being diagnosed with CD, I thought I had developed food allergies. Sometimes I felt completely fine after eating and sometimes I would be in the bathroom for hours and hours and hours. I started keeping a food journal to document each time I had an "episode" and to record what I had eaten leading up to it. The picture became so clear for me.....there are just certain things I absolutely cannot eat, ever, even if I'm feeling fabulous. The silliest of things too.......whoda thunk something like a tiny piece of sugarless gum could wreak such havoc on one's bowel? For me, it does! Along with a huge laundry list of other things, such as:
MSG along with any other type of additive/preservative (Doritos, for example, are loaded with them. They used to be my fav! Oh the cravings I have......but I just can't eat them anymore)
Artificial sweeteners (particularly the one in the yellow packet)
Soy (in any way, shape or form)
High Fructose Corn Syrup
Caramel Coloring
Arugula (salad green)
Nuts (particularly peanuts)
I now find myself scrutinizing the labels on everything I buy at the grocery store. One tiny ingredient can send me into a huge intestinal episode immediately upon consuming it. This makes it very difficult to eat out.....and I have barely escaped some extremely embarrassing moments.
A food journal may help you pinpoint what, if anything, is irritating your bowel. Also, Probies rock! They are a staple in my daily routine, along with a multi-vitamin, Calcium +D and Iron.
Good luck and I hope you feel better really soon!
