i am 38, having crohns for like 15 years. It mostly in remission. was prescribed pentasa, however took it rarely due to asymptomatic condition. Recently started taking it, than med was changed to asacol, becouse multiple fistulas were found in my intestine. Experiencing hair loss. Really scared. My GI MD prescribing me 6mp to heal these fistula and inflammation in my intestine, and I am terrified by side effects, including significant hair loss that i should anticipate now... 6pm i understand is oral chemotherapy drug, and this sounds even more horrifying. I was wondering if anyone is on pentasa or asacol and 6mp and the hair came back to normal ? Folic acid sumplements help. but what is the dosage? How FA interacts with 6mp? will appreciate sharing info.

Hairshedding is common with many Crohns meds. But you are NOT going to go bald from it. I take 1000 mcg of Folic Acid and it has helped to slow the hairshedding way down. You can also find some shampoos that will help slow the hair shedding down. Also, Biotin is another good supplement to help with your hair. Hugs~

Hi there! I was on Pentasa for 8 years during which I noticed I was losing a lot of hair. I used to have very thick hair and now it's thinned out quite a bit but I'm not going bald as far as I can tell. I was told that it's very common for people who are chronically taking medication. I've switched from Pentasa to Remicade and I still see big wads of hair every day. Then again, my hairstylist told me that even healthy women lose approximately 100 strands of hair every single day! If it continues to bother you, definitely speak to your doctor again. Good luck!

Ive been on everything, and only ever had hair loss when weaning off prednisone. And with being on pred, hair loss is the least of your worries! Acne, rages, buffalo hump, etc!

I wouldnt worry about it til it starts to happen....good luck!

I don't mean to be discouraging, but I am taking prednisone (tapering) and 6MP and my hair loss has become so significant that I just had to order a wig.  I am taking Vit.  D and folic acid, but my hair loss has left me with about 20 percent of the hair I used to have and it is so thin in some places, my scalp is showing.  I am older so that may have something to do with it. I am also flaring  right now and maybe have some malabsorption issues.  Just want to prepare some of you for what may happen, although the odds are it won't.  Just us lucky few!

Olderthandirt- hair loss when weaning from pred is classic. I lost a LOT of hair during that time. Get it cut as short as you can handle.. My gastro explained that on higher doses, the hair thins, and when that thin hair comes t the surface and has to support all the weight of the normal hair, it just breaks off.. So the lighter you can get it, the better. I did a short angular bob to limit hair loss.

Thanks for the info. I was aware of that, too, and did cut my hair shorter, but I have been on the pred for 8 months, and all my hair is very thin now and just keeps coming out. I don't even recognize myself in the mirror any more with the moon face and the hair loss. I have a short straight cut as curling also damages the already damaged hair even further.
