Just wondering how many with crohn's has gotten disability and how long did it take? How many times were you denied?

I am not on disability, but have seen many on the forum who are. Hopefully one of them will be along soon, with more info. I do know that almost everyone is denied at least the first time, and I have heard that its best to have a lawyer with you too. Generally they will take a percentage of your award (you get a large check at first due to backpay) to cover there services. Good luck!

I am Canadian.

I applied for CPP - D , when forced, several years ago by my long term disability insurance co and was denied.

This time, when i approached long term disability chang of definition..they again forced me to apply for cpp-d and i was approved! Subsequebtly, i was approved for long, long term disability thru my inurance as well. Tgis was tge time i decided i was going to get a lawyer and fight the decision ( i was sure i'd get rejected as i hear everyone does the first time) .. But they approved me..its been such a relief. Some das its all i can do to get out of bed without crying.

Thanks Nanners and Tara28 for your replies. I am in the United States and am applying for Social Security Disability and have been denied twice. I have severe Crohns disease, Fibro, Myofascial Pain syndrome. Was on remicade but it stopped working and they have changed me to Cimzia. Currently in a really bad flare up. Have had one resection already and afraid I will have to have another one in the near future. This disease is very depressing!

If you get a lawyer, they only take a percent of your back pay, and nothing if you lose.

Did you see the soc security-d form before it was sent in? You have to have a condition considered severe, and prolonged. Severe meaning basically unable to perform any occupatin for wage, profit or gain. Prolonged as in youre not likely to be any better a year from now.

So you need to a) show you were severely and consistently disabled for the last xyz years...
B) submit every test done showing concrete disease..i even submitted typed dictations between my gastro and my surgeon outlining how bad off i was
C) give them a rundown of your typical day. If you have to lie in bed til noon, tell them. If you have to eat all meals and snacks while on the toilet, tell them. Now is not the time to hold back. Really create a mental picture for them
D) dont forget to mention the other problems its caused like pain, joint issues, muscle aches, exhaustion, urgency, eye infections, angular chelitit, abcesses, fistulae, erythema nodosum, pyoderma gangrenosum. Etc. Give an 8x 10 glossy. Show em its SEVERE. Good luck and dont give up!

Thanks Tara26. I did give them all of that and also the doctor that SS had evaluate me also said that I was unable to work as well as my doctor. Trying to stay positive as I have heard that it takes a long time and everyone tells me to expect to be denied several times. Believe me I would rather be able to get up and go to work eveyday and have my life back than to have to go through all this disease has brought me. I appreciate all of your replies and support. I don't post much but am on here reading quite a bit.

Did not take long for me . I was never denied . All depends on your age when you apply and how much your doctor is behind you .

like dawg and sniper said, your dr has to be behind your decision 100%. I was rubber stamped 1st time then accepted 2nd time total of 5 months. I still work out of my house, but I can stop or I can not work if I feel like ****, but I'm an artist so it's a bit different, I only worked for a Co. for 5 yrears, as a table games dealer in a casino(indian casino) very difficult place to work when you have br issues. but I'm 60

Sniper- thats interesting, age of applicant? The older you are, the more likely you get approved? Ive always felt they are less willing to write you off when so young as it means theyll be likely payng out a very long time.

But sometimes its just the person who's reviewing the iles. Some are mre heavy handed than others..my uncle with end stage kidney failure and on dialysis 3 days aweek and complications was DENIED first time!

Thank you all for your valuable input. Talk with my attorney today and we are doing an appeal for a hearing with a judge. I know it will probably be a long process. I really wish I was still able to work and do the things that I use to enjoy. As for age I am 48 yrs old and have worked since I was 14 yrs old up until last year.
