cry Blah...so I had my first excperience with a NG tube this weekend....What sadist invented such a mean and cruel thing!!! Once the tube was in it was not bad...not good but not bad...going in..well thats a whole other story...I bawled like a baby! The nurse said it was okay to do so...so I did..lol.. All in all it cleaned me out..I felt better...and if it had to happen again...well I would be crying before they even started..but would do it if I had to. My husband said to look at the bright side...that at least it wasnt going up the other end....I laughed..lol...I said at least the other end I am knocked out..and I dont have to have it in for 2 days.

In the end I had a sore throut..and sticky tape residue all over my face and a bloody nose...and a cleaned out gut. So yes I would do it again..but I will still be scared poopless...lol

They are my pet hate. I've never been one to beg or plead,but with those things I would give up my
first born for them to remove it!! A necessary evil:(

They're horrible, aren't they. I list my ng insertion as one of the more traumatic experiences of my Crohn's life :-(.

I'm really sorry you had to go through that.

NG tubes SUCK big time going down I know I had repeated boel obstructions and had the great use of the NG but after it was down and the stress and the tears were all over I know it helped alot it just scares the poop out of ya....At least u know what 2 look 4ward 2 next time..

Most of my NG experience has been when they are inserted while I am under anesthesia (thank goodness!). But - I had one in for over a week once and it was horrible. I was under treatment by one of the partners in my GI practice, and he was very conservative. When I complained I wanted the tube out, he insisted we had to wait until I passed gas, which is difficult to create when you are on liquids - lol! One of the nurses taking care of me told me she had to endure one for 3 months once. She had a very hoarse voice, and she shamed me into not whining so much :)

I did end up with a very sore throat on that side, and for months afterwards, it would act up at the first sign of any nasal drainage, etc. It took a long time for it to completely heal.

As we have all said, a necessary evil.

The NG tube is absolutely horrible. I've had one several times. I was in the hospital pregnant with my son and had an obstruction. I was vomiting for days and no one would do anything for me because they were worried about a law suit if something happened to my child. This was at a nationally ranked hospital! Long story short though, after they discharged me while still sick, then readmitted me later that night due to the same symptoms, one of the nurses took pity on me. She knew I had to get the NG tube and that I was freaking out. She gave me two Benedryl beforehand. This shrunk my nasal passages a tiny bit, and more importantly, had me a little dopey so I wasn't so hysterical about getting it. Now, it wasn't a walk in the park, but it was much easier than the first time. See if you can request some Benedryl the next time. God bless that girl. She was even nice enough to wait until it kicked in! (She also said because I was tiny with a tiny nose that they could use an NG tube from the pediatric wing...much better!)

OOOOHH! Pediatric NG - what a great idea! I've been using a pediatric colonoscope for years. It makes a huge (or small) difference - lol! I am requesting that next time. I would like to be positive and say I will never need one again, but we know how that goes...

My first NG tube experience was pretty bad too. I learned real quick that whenever two nurses come into your room and stand on either side of the bed, bad stuff is going to happen. I learned that one of them is there to hold you down while the other one does something truly horrible to you. Even today when two nurses are in the room at the same time, I get nervous.

I had one for about a week, and it took me about two months for my throat to stop hurting. After a couple of days in the hospital, they disconnected the NG tube, but insisted on leaving it in. After about the 2 night of the disconnected NG tube keeping me awake, I finally pulled it out on my own. The nurses were pretty surprised that I managed to do it on my own, but the discomfort finally overruled the fear of self extracting it.

I've had them since, but I guess I'm a little more comfortable with the procedure. I agree though, who was the first whack job that thought it would be a good idea to snake a hose up someones nose?

I take that back, my worst experience with an NG tube was at an Army hospital that I got sent to. They wanted to do an upper GI test, and for some reason they put the contrast stuff in by NG tube. Well, of course, the doctor was no where to be found after they put the tube in. The tech turned the flow on and let it run. He, of course, left the room and got sidetracked doing something else. Meantime I'm laying on the table while the big bottle of barium or whatever continues to drain into my gut. AFter about 15 minutes of this, I was full, so my stomach decide to eject it all. Luckily I was able to turn my head to the side to keep from choking on it, I also managed to nail the tech with projectile vomit. Of course along with the barium, the NG tube come up also. I now had a tube running down my nose, looped out of my mouth and back into my gut. It caused me to start choking and I couldn't breath. Tech yelled for the Doc, who finally showed up and grabbed the end of the tube at my nose and did a pretty good imitation of trying to start a cranky lawn mower. Needless to say I was very sore after that. I'm still slightly pleased with myself for being able to puke on the tech. I'm betting he never did that again.
