Miralax Help (not the prep)

Question: I am trying Miralax for the first time...reccommended by my new surgeon due to difficulty w/ painful/ difficult bm's...I took 2 sips and could already feel the cramping skull Then began the gas and a very long time in the bathroom w/ first bm...this was all w/in an hour...I can still feel the cramping should I finish the rest or give up??

My GI recommended miralax to me but a physiatrist recommended senna. I opted for the senna because I was afraid of the miralax - I'm sorry you've had such a hard time with it and I would not take the rest of it.

The senna gave me some cramps the first few times I took it, but now it's working well. I've been taking half of the recommended dose every other night and it has really helped keep me regular. It has a stool softener in it, too.

Did it help make things softer and easier to pass? I'm guessing from "very long time in the bathroom" that it didn't.

Miralax works not by pushing things through your intestines, but by telling your colon not to absorb as much water, so things are more watered down and easy to pass.

I wonder if being nervous about it is adding to your symptoms. Not that I don't think you're having cramps and such, but to have them after 2 sips of miralax is pretty fast. My guess would be that you're stressed (and who wouldn't be with upcoming surgery) and it's making the experience with miralax worse.

I'm heavily affected by stress. I get D so quickly from stress.

Maybe you should give yourself a break from this and try again later?

In my experience with Miralax, it takes a 2nd dose the 2nd day to get things moving along. And even then, it wasn't a hurried, rush-to-the-bathroom type of experience.

My doctor recommended Miralax when I was having problems late last year/early this year. It was the first time for me, too. I was a little nervous about it, and took just half a dose the first time. I didn't want to have emergency bathroom trips at work!

The 2nd night I took a full dose.

It has been gentle on my system. I was on it for at least 4 months before surgery, and since about 1 month after surgery (so 3 more months now.)

I mix it with 8oz apple juice or cherry/berry Juicy Juice with supper in the evening. I wait a couple of minutes for it to disolve until you no longer see it. I typically just drink it down in 2 or 3 drinks. I cannot taste it at all.
