Another Percocet question

Due to allergic reactions, I am limited to taking Percocet and/or Fentanyl  for pain because everything else causes SVT. I am due for bone decompression surgery and a bone graft (thanks for prednisone for my crohn's) and find that  taking a whole percocet 5/350 causes insomnia. Does this happen to you and if it does, can you take something else to help you rest? I am worried that after my surgery, I will be so wired from Percocet, I won't get needed rest.

I don't have that problem with percocet, but have that with lortab. I've noticed it with the 5/325 especially. If I take a higher dose (7.5/500 or higher), that doesn't happen though. After surgery I was taking 10 or 15mg and was able to rest fine. I've also noticed over the years that when the medicine doesn't have the acetaminophen added to it, it makes me more sleepy. Maybe because the pill is so much smaller and my body is able to break it down and absorb it better?

I discussed this with my PCP and she looked at me like I was crazy. She said if one narcotic gives me energy, all of them should...which in my case isn't true. It's interesting to me that I'm not the only one this happens to.

I wonder if 10mg of percocet might not have the same energizing effect on you?? Maybe getting oxycodone (percocet minus the acetaminophen) might work differently for you. Or, you could ask your dr for a prescription for something like xanax or klonipin to help relax you if you get jittery after surgery.

I find that benadryl helps however when I need pain meds they also wire me I have muscle relaxers for a pinched nerve in my shoulder/back area and those things have me out in a flash. You may want to discuss with your doctor about ambien benadryl or something along those lines or even the anti depressants that are out there some have a side effect that makes you tired. I take elavil to prevent headaches then there is also trazadone (another antidepressant that is used for insomnia I use to take that a while back over 10 yrs ago or so sow but that too worked well)

You will have to see what your doc thinks is best for you and go from there (tylenol PM etc is just tylenol and benadryl many do not kow that) so if you are on percoset with tylenol i them you want to stay away from tylenol PM and just try benadryl. Again with your current meds it may be beneficial to check with your doc 1st

sometimes- and other times it helps me sleep. i take 15 mg...
if i need to sleep i'll take a xanax sometimes (or another oxycodone...)

Thanks for the responses! I have prescriptions for both Xanax and Ambien but wasn't sure if I could take one or the other with the Percocets. After surgery I will be on Fentanyl so I am hoping that drug will make me sleepy but I seem to have the opposite reaction to most meds.

You certainly can take xanax, ambien and oxy. Everyone has a different tolerance and reaction. At night I often need my klonopin, ambien, oxycodone and if it gets really bad or I have been throwing up that day I take phenergren.

I have had to take prednisone for the last week (very long story) and I am actually very intolerant of it. Long story short- was just dc'd from hospital and jerk dr would not even rx solumedrol, fluconazole etc. I ended up with thrush and forcing myself to take an old prednisone rx just to stay unblocked until my pcp got back from vacay.

So, I have had extreme insomnia from the prednisone and have had to really try hard to sleep.

Thank you Supanova. I feel much better knowing I can take something to help me sleep. It is so hard to find a drug that my heart can tolerate and when I did (with Percocet) it gave me terrible insomnia! Now I can rest easier knowing I wont be up every night after surgery!

Did any of you have gas/bloating issues while taking Percocet? I get so uncomfortable. What do you take for that?

Is it constipating for you? If so that could be the cause of the discomfort. I take stool softners to keep things softer and easier to pass. Hugs!

No, I only take the pill at night because that is when the pain is the worst. I use the bathroom in the morning as usual. The gas starts about 45 minutes after I take the pill. I take a tums but it only takes away about half of the gas. The rest just sits there until the Percocet wears off.
