Wow I am surprised to find so many other OAS friends. I have used regular Coke or other Cola soda to help relieve MILD symptoms or to bridge the time until the Benedryl kicks in. Should be nice and cold. I don't know if it is the bubbles, the sugar, the caffeine, the cold or placebo or all of the above that helps but it really helps me. Been doing that for many decades.
Padme I am similar in that apples was one of the last fruits I could eat fresh but peeled as a young boy. Blueberries weren't too bad either but never a staple in my house. I am very surprised that rice would bother you. That is one that is never eaten raw and for me is the most relaxing unreactive food. Was there something else on the plate? Was it white rice? Are you certain? No offense just amazed and sorry.
Bookworm: Yeah I was OAS before CD also. Could it be related in cases like ours? Perhaps the next supercomputer or Einstein will tell us. I am beyond eating a fruit with an allergy pill. I just use the pill if there is a little bit of nuts or spice or undercooked veggies mixed in with my food when eating out. I don't deliberately eat "bad" food anymore. Too scary and uncomfortable. That article took the same don't worry about
it attitude as your allergists but it did say that it can get bad rarely and mine, with some foods, is real scary enough to worry about
it. Just gets worse as time goes on.
Keah: I did carry an epi-pen after the hives incident. I have quit now though and try to be very careful what I eat. If the reaction is bad I pop 50 mg of benedryl. That makes me soooo sleepy though. Not a fun date after that lol
I do plan to see an allergist soon. I don't think they can desensitize me though from what I have read, bummer. I would love to grab an apple off one of my trees and just luxuriate in the juicy, crunchy, sweetness of it......
Michelle: The reaction you describe is exactly the same for me and while I didn't mention it tree nuts for me also. I can eat roasted most of them but for ie. walnuts in the brownies will make me feel uncomfortable. The ear itching and the throat is the same. I used to make a nasty hawking noise to try to scratch my throat. My Dad, who is 80 has this also but not as bad as I do. Meat and potatoes and rice and stuff cooked to death is what I live on. I did get scratch tested some years ago for the seasonal allergies. I heard the nurse tell another nurse with amazement that I had reacted to EVERYTHING she scratched me with. I then started the shots for a period of time. One evening I reacted to the injection and they made me stay for a while and gave me benedryl if I recall. Few visits later the nurse (whom I had little confidence in) started to give me an injection and I pulled away from her. Luckily I look when I am injected and I noticed the liquid was dark like dark tea and the syringe was full. I said "That's not my medicine" She was giving me the next level -up concentration at full dose. Since I had had a reaction before that would have really sent me to anaphalaxis. She was aghast at her error and reduced it to the tiny amount it should have been but - That was my last allergy shot. Also got them as a kid by the way.
Zanne: Maybe she can try the Cola like I do until the Benedryl kicks in or even for a mild reaction I use Coke alone. Don't play games though use the strong stuff if you need it. Remember it is not diet or decaf.
Thanks everyone for your stories, feedback and support. Warmly appreciated. Have a great Tnx giving but skip the salad and go for the meat and potatoes :)
