What is the chance my kids will have Crohn's?

The following is from the web page PB4 referenced in another thread. Is this your understanding? I thought that my kids had only a very small increase in their chance to have Crohn's.

Neither of my parents had Crohns, my Mom said she thought my Dad's sister may have had it as she always had tummy problems and diarrhea. But in those days I don't think they knew much about Crohns.

But none of my kids or grandkids have shown any sign on the disease. Also I am the only one of my siblings who got Crohns. My oldest sister has been diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis. I know that is another autoimmune disease, so it is a small possibility that your kids could get Crohns or another autoimmune disease. Hugs!

My only relative with Crohn's is only my relative through marriage, so yeah. However, my mom has Fibromayalgia and my dad has RA, and those are both auto-immune diseases, same as Crohn's, so I was kinda screwed from the beginning, lol.

Other research has indicated a -10 to 15 fold increased risk if one parent has an IBD their offspring will also develop an IBD (could be UC or CD), if both parents have an IBD the aproximate risk their offspring will get an IBD goes to 50%.

My mom had UC, but she didn't get sick with her UC until AFTER I got sick with my crohn's (so her IBD was obviously triggered after mine was) she was in her mid 60's and I was in my early 20's.

Although I have 5 other siblings, they are all half siblings, my mom and dad only had me together, and I'm the youngest. So far none of my other siblings have an IBD but that doesn't mean they won't, doesn't mean they necessarily will either (some or all of them could be prone to getting an IBD but it would have to be triggered for them). Researchers are still very unclear as to how IBD passes on to family members.

I have 2 kids, my oldest is my daughter and when she was 14 yrs old she started having tummy issues, to this day she is still DX as having IBS no IBD, she'll be 22 in January. My son so far shows no signs of any gut issues (knocking on wood he never does), he's 18 yrs old.

Don't stress over it though, because you could be worrying yourself over nothing and even if your kids do end up with an IBD there isn't anything you can do to change it. Not trying to sound harsh but since I too have kids and my daughter already suffers with severely painful IBS, as much as it kills me that she suffers, I can't do anything about it. I didn't know I had crohn's until my daughter (first born) was almost 2 yrs old and when I asked my docs about the heredity of IBD they all said nothing was concrete as far as how it got passed down, so we had one more kid (my son) and stopped there.

I can't say it isn't something that I think about for my son. He's 13 and has had trouble with constipation his whole life. But that seems to run more in my family then my Crohn's. My Aunt very well might have Crohn's. She is still undiagnosed, and pretty much in denial about it. Neither of my parents had/have it.

As I said in the cancer thread, if we are going to worry about all the things we have increased risk for because of family, we'd go crazy! I've got lots of heart disease, stroke, cancers, you name it, in our family. There isn't anything we can do about it.

I've told my son not to worry, that it isn't certain he'll have it. But I also prepared him with what to keep an eye out for. If God forbid he does get it, at least he'll have me to be there for him. Knowing exactly what he's going through. But knock on wood, I pray he never has to deal with it!

Just to add some more data.

My sister has crohn's too, and just had a surgery to remove terminal ileum and ileo-cecal valve. She was diagnosed 10 years after me. I was 19 and she was 31 when diagnosed.

Other that that... no other relatives till now.  

My daughter is 10 right now and I have been terrified since the day I found out I was pregnant tha she would end up with this. Fingers crossed, we are lucky so far.

I went to a symposium in Canada on the weekend and they spoke of a project call the The GEM project. This is a study for siblings or offspring of people diagnosed with Crohns or uc where the take a blood, stool and urine sample and then check in with you every 6 months for 6 years to see if those siblings or children have been diagnosed with either disease. I came home, spoke to my husband and daughter aboutnit and we think it's incredibly important. I believe the ages are from 6 to 36.

My brother has Crohn's, my parents did not. I think there's an overall increased risk of our children getting an autoimmune disorder, not necessarily crohns. My oldest daughter has ITP, another autoimmune disorder.
