When should Entocort kick in?

I started Entocort 3mg two weeks ago. At the same time, I started tapering pred to 5 mg but flared up, so a lot of Crohnies here thankfully advised me to taper it slowly. I did that and I do take 7.5 mg a day and 5 mg the other day with an average of 6.25 mg. But I can't take it any more. I'm very fatigued, I can't get out of bed, sleep a lot, have very low grade fever and D. My GI thought mistakenly that I should wean pred off throughout a month. I can't. Is it a must? When would this darn Entocort kick in? I'm waiting for both MTX and Entocort to kick in but it doesn't seem that they will.

Would it be a wrong decision to keep pred 7.5 mg until Entocort kicks in (3 - 6 months??) or should I up the Entocort dose? My GI told me that 3 mg is a very high dose when we take into consideration that 9mg is the utmost dose of Entocort.

I think you really need to call your GI because the tapering of Prednisone and the adding of Entocort is complicated. Generally they start with 9mg of Entocort and taper down from there, so I don't really know what your doc is thinking. I didn't find Entocort helpful and was on it for about a month at 9mg. I was on the generic, and there have been several posts that the generic is not as effective. My doc did tell me though that by three weeks I should be able to tell if the Entocort was helpful. I have C rather than D, so my situation/symptoms were different from yours. I really think you should call your doctor. We all have different severity and variations of location of the disease, so getting advice on dosage here will be confusing and maybe not so helpful. Sorry you don't feel well...good luck

3mg is not enough to bring remission. Usually 9 like then taper like gumby said but the lower dose may be to offset still being on pred. I would have thought you would have been better off pred and on 9mg.

I find 6mg is a good remission dose for me but when I drop to 3mg it all starts up again.

good luck getting some releif - it is a great drug in the right dose :)

Thank you. I saw my doc today and I asked him to up the dose to 6 mg. Hopefully, this makes any effect. He prescribed a new antibiotic. Hope it controls D.

hey guys; I found ent. kicked in within a week, but I couldn't handle side effects, I work with my hands(artist) and ent. made my skin really thin, and I would cut my hands really easy and they never heal(cuts that is). and then it wasn't working other than side effects, gave me know relief, I went onto imuran, but those sides are tough for me as well, it seems the only med that helps is pred. and pain med's. can't do rem. or any of those big guns, they don't like me. my resected site is ok, thats were inflammtion is for me, in sm. bow. but I've had in all 9ft removed(small bowel). short bowel syndrome, is my biggest issue. I also tried asacol, no good. so now I'm on 50mg's a day of imuran and 12.50 mg of pred, trying to find the right amount to keep me flare free, without using to much pred. I'm staying on 12.50 for another 6 days then go down to 10. below that and I start flaring in throat and mouth, esph.

Thank you. Sorry you had to go through all these side effects. I too can't live without pred. I tried both Azathioprine and Imuran and had severe side effects. Pentasa can't work alone and I'm waiting for either MTX or Entocort to kick in.
