CD at a younger age also equals this???

     Well, I always knew I had other issues from my childhood, besides a very late growth spurt & phantom appendicitis attacks ( Not to mention the kidney issues). But I just read up on Aspargar's Syndrome (sp??) and...

      That description matches me 100%. Well, I know its just a label, but there was suspcion long ago that I was a high functioning autistic. Of course, when I was small, no one knew there was such a thing.

      I've been aware for over a decade that some autistic children have IBD. Just another delayed development thing..

      Of course, I know how to get around my own blockages now, but it cost me a lot in my early adulthood, before Mr. Crohn's made his official visit.. eyes  

       One more thing to live with.

       But if I ever had/have children what would their risk be for either CD or Autism ( Or UC)???

According to an IBD genetics researcher here in Canada, if one parent has an IBD (either CD or UC) their offspring has a -10-15 fold increased risk of developing an IBD (either UC or CD). My mom had UC, I have CD, none of my other siblings show any signs of an IBD yet....they are all older than me, I got CD at 24 yrs old, my mom didn't get her UC until after I got CD, she was in her mid 60's.

There's some good research out there that shows the familial likelihood of autism spectrum disorders, and also inflammatory bowel disease runs in families. Autism spectrum disorders are much more likely these days than they were in previous generations, and the explanation that I like best for that is that our culture is so focused on information technology and scientific process that our inherent genetic tendencies toward more process oriented people is being expressed. Isn't that cool!

It sounds like from your post that you have reached a level of acceptance for your uniqueness and that is awesome.

I have had CD since I was 8 never knew or heard of any connection my step son has Asperger's and ADHD and I do see some similarities to my OCD

My brother has a very severe form of Autism. He's the only one in our family with it. Although there is some suspicion that my cousin's child may have Aspargar's.

Both IBD and Autism I'm sure run in families. But not always. There are people who are the only ones in their family. I worry about my son getting IBD, but there are so many things that run in my family, you really can't worry about it.

Matthew, why do think you have Aspergars, are you still displaying symptoms? My 6 year old
Grandson has been dx with a mild form of Aspergars, his symptoms are that of a child that have
tendencies to be withdrawn, but in the blinking of an eye can be hyper. He worries about things no
6 year old should worry about. Academically he's about a year behind his peers, although the school
allowed him to go into first grade, rather than hold him back in kindie. Sometimes I wish they had
held him back, but that's just a Grandma's opinion.

I'm happy that you seem to have a handle on the situation, but if you can give me some guidance
for my Grandson, I would appreciate it. That is if you wouldn't mind.

I can't answer you on the chances of passing it along. But as I"ve gotten older (and wiser?) I've started to wonder if I also have mild Aspargers on top of the CD. Never asked my PCP about the possibility, I just figure if I do and I've lived with it for 50 yrs what's the point now?

I've always displayed symptoms of something like this, but working in Retail (Yuck!) for so long has given me the ability to surpress most of that behavior. At home & in my private life, things have never been so smooth. It really still effects my love life, sadly.
I've always been a bit of a loner. Also, all my close friends know how much OCD I sometimes have.
Of course, one trait that has served him well, is that I really cannot lie. Not well anyway. (Though I did stall enough in 2009 to catch a couple of Check Frauds at Wal*Mart working the Service desk.). I've always been good at focusing on one thing.
In fact, looking back on it, I'm the freaking poster chil;d for Asparger's. Every single thing in that description has been/is me.
Some of that has faded with age, or I've learned to get around it one way or another.
And I *DO* blame the Crohn's for this!

As for Addvice for your grandson, is he literate? I've found that its easier to talk about more complex emotional issues if I write. Speaking about it just turns into mumbles or evasions. Or silence..
Also, best not to surprise him. That advicve is on the Society Website. If you prepare him ahead of time, in small ways, for changes, it might go smoother.

Oh, and I got held back in First Grade, because I had trouble relating to other kids. That I DEFINITELY remember. Forgot that little snippet. Even though I have a High IQ..

We are more focused information, is just one reason. But remember, the definition used to be pretty strict & applied to only severe cases. Things included now, like Aspargar's were probably considerd stuff like Schizoid Personality Disorder & such. That is another reason there are more Dx's.
