the other day i drank till i got tipsy but somehow ended up in the hospital having to almost get my stomach pumped. i was wondering if being on remicade could be a big factor in this incident?

idk about the Remicade being a factor, but I know that for myself, I don't drink ANY alcohol at all because of the effects it has on my CD.

Alcohol usually has no ill side effects on my or my Crohns Disease, I dont drink heavily, nor do I drink often, not even once a month, but when I do I don't have to worry about how much I drink, or what I've ate or done that day to determine if it's ok, I have no issues what-so-ever. Which I assume most people won't have a big issue or problem drinking a drink or two, especially if it's a can or bottle of beer, if alcohol was going to hurt you it would most likely be stronger stuff, shots, mixed drinks, wine, and champagnes. Bottom line is just like medication and food, we're all different and will affect us all differently. Now if your talking or get talking about the medication might say do not drink alcohol, but if I recall correctly, your not supposed to drink with tylenol even, thats just an overall 'rule-of-thumb' that the FDA chooses to use I believe, matter of fact thats some probiotics or digestive enzymes, something along those lines of supplements that one I had even said no alcohol. It's all if your willing to try, which a lot of people aren't.

Actually beer affects me more than hard alcohol because of the wheat in it.. Generally speaking beer will be harder to drink for most people with CD than other types of alcohol. I can't drink anything if I'm already feeling bad, if I'm not then I can drink about as much as I normally would (but I'm not really a big drinker anyway), just if I get really drunk and end up with a hangover, it'll be 10x worse than it would have been before I got sick. I'm not sure if Remicade would have done this because I've never taken this, but there's a good chance it was just your CD.

When I'm feeling well, I can have a few beers before feeling like crap. I've never had any issues with hard liquor. It (obviously) varies by individual.

I learned (the hard way) not to attempt to drink if I am feeling bad. But since on Remicade, I have found that I can only have 1 dark beer or 2 light beers, 3-4 glasses wine and 1 mixed drink. It wasn't until a couple of years ago that alcohol did this to me. My solution is to enjoy 1 top shelf drink for the night and stay away from beer.

I'm on Remicade every 6 weeks and drink almost every weekend while at school. I drink a decent amount of beer but make sure that I never cross the threshold of having fun with my friends, and blacking out. I've worked it out with my doctor so I get a liver function test every time I go in for my infusion. I started out drinking slowly when we first tried this and now amp it up every time my liver test comes back OK. I would suggest this to anyone who is young or likes to drink a decent amount. Our theory is that I will be able to find my limit in the tests and not the hard way, stomach pumping. I think the most important thing to look for is how you responded to alcohol before Remicade and what your family history is. I'm 90% Irish and 10% Scottish so my genetic tolerance may be higher than most. But regardless, I'd suggest to any one seeking an answer to this question to consult your doctor first and if you decide to drink start off slowly and never push to black-out level.

Alcohol is alcohol, whether it is beer, wine or spirits, there is no difference in the alcohol. You can ingest more alcohol faster when it is in "hard liquor" than if it is in the form of beer. (A possible exception is beer drinkers in Australia who have brought the activity to Olympic levels).
I have been on Remicade for 14 months and a drink or a glass of wine or a personal favorite Guiness have given me no problem at all. Maybe it relaxes me a bit so I am not constantly being stressed.... I would think that moderation should be the byword for any of us with Crohn's.

Welcome to Healing Well, Laura! I received Remicade for 2.5 years. I was also on Imuran. When I began the two meds, four days after my first infusion it was my daughter's birthday. I had a glass of white one and felt fine. Mid-way through the second glass of wine, the room began to spin and I felt extremely inebriated. Prior to this, two, even three glasses of wine would not make me intoxicated.
Fastforward two years, and the GI took me off Imuran. Guess what, I no longer had a problem handling alcohol.
Everyone's experiences are different because our bodies are so individualistic.
How are you feeling now?

hello .. i am 24 years old and like my hubby says im a cheap date... lol.... with one glass of wine, i am a happy camper... with crohns i def dont drink the way i thought i would years ago... If i am feeling sick i wont drink at all, but if i am feeling ok i will have my glass maybe two glasses of wine and thats where i cut it.... Remicade has given me some type of youth back and i dont want to push my luck so for now that glass is enough at the most once a month... :) but i do warn, if my tummy is off, then the wine just makes everything worse... good luck
