Fistula on my You know what....the saga continues

Im not a fistula newb, but a fistula has reared it's ugly head on my...lip. And not the lip on my face. I know I'm in medical school and these things shouldn't gross me out but it's pretty annoying. Not to mention it pretty much rules out bikini waxage. I'm on call tonight and all I can think about is getting home to a scalding bucket of salt water....ughhhhhhhhhhhhh 15 more hours till home. Any tricks for managing these suckers? I'm having the strangest symptoms....bloody d first, but there is also definite attempts at solid poo. I'm thinking this is rectal inflammation. Counting the days to my next cimzia shots. Has anyone ever tried doing a shot every 2 wks instead of 2 shots every 4 wks?

It sucks having these fistulas. They're difficult to treat. When I was on Cimzia my fistula kept flaring up, I'd go on a round of antibiotics (cipro), it would go away, then a couple of months later it would be back again. I ended up going on Cipro permanently while on Cimzia. I am having a similar situation w/ MTX right now. Can't take it because I keep getting abscesses there near the fistula. I don't think it's the actual fistula because I had surgery and it is draining. I think it's the drainage, even though I clean it often throughout the day, is causing skin infections while on MTX. My immune system is lowered and it keeps causing infections in that area. If I go back on Cimzia I will definitely have to be on Cipro at the same time.

You should probably see your GI dr about this. They can get you on a course of antibiotics that will help for the meantime. Good luck!!!

THanks firecracker. Yeah, I've started back up on the antibiotics. And have choked down two packets of VSL #3 (i haaaate that nasty lemon flavor, ugh) so hopefully this helps get things quieted down. It's just so dang frustrating. I've noticed that keeping the area super-clean with Bactine spray really helps, and it doesn't sting.
