FLAGYL WHY NOT LONG TERM??

I KNOW THAT THE HIP PAIN, BONE ACHES AND DIAHERRA AND CRAMPING IS ALL RELATED TO CHRONES WHY DONT THEY JUST KEEP ME ON A LOW DOSE FLAGYL?? IT TOOK MOST OF MY SYMPTOMS AWAY. AND IS THE DIAHERRA GOING TO COME BACK AS BAD AS BEFORE, THE CRAMPING THE BLOOD?? AND WHY ARE MY EYES BLOODSHOT, I KNOW ITS A SYMPTOM BUT IT LOOKS LIKE i HAVE BEEN CRYING. i DIDNT REALIZE IT WAS A SYMPTOM, WHEN I WAS ON FLAGYL MY HUSBAND SAID HE HADNT SEEN THE WHITES IN MY EYES IN AWHILE. idea

How long were you on it? My daughter's pediatric GI is willing to use it long term 6 months or even rotating or pulsing on and off indefinitely. there are side effects but if you notice any of them you can stop and really they are far less than those of the biologics etc. So, I don't know why they took you off? Can you ask to stay on? Also, we have a GP who "had" UC 20 years ago. She had a very severe case, but she took a "horse dose" of flagyl for a couple of years and has not flared since. If it works for you I consider it a clue - maybe a higher dose could put you in more solid remission?

I think one concern is paresthsia and/or peripheral neuropathy.

I know a big risk of antibiotics is not using them correctly or stopping amd starting them and letting bacteria grow and become resistant to the drug. Its why a lit of docs are waiting to prescribe antibiotics less and less... I'm on flagyl now but i have microperforations... I wonder what it would have done for me before them..

i WAS ON 2 WEES OFF ONE ON 2 WEEKS, LAST NIGHT WAS A BAD NIGHT AND TODAY I AM SICK. i WAS STRESSED LAST NIGHT FAMILY ISSUES. I HATE THIS DISEASE. BUT THE FLAGYL DOES WORK.

Flagyl can have some serious side effects that become more probable the longer you take it. Besides side effects it can make you eligible for eventually getting C Diff.

Perhaps you can use Flagyl temporarily to strip your gut flora of the bad bacteria. You could also take probiotics to replenish the good bacteria killed by antibiotics to help you remain in remission. I think that is what has happened to me.

S. Boulardii is an excellent probiotic to take while on Flagyl since it is a probiotic yeast that is not killed by antibiotics. Also take conventional probiotics about 3 hours after antibiotics and every day afterwards. The intent is to tip the balance of power between good and bad bacteria by killing off the bad bacteria and constantly replenishing the good guys with probiotics.

Hopefully the good guys in your gut will help keep the bad guys in check to help maintain remission.

I was put on it for 4-6 weeks at a time..I was also put on Cipro with it sometimes..I did have paresthsia and/or peripheral neuropathy, but it did go away. For the longest time, it was needed like every 3-4 months even after my long stints. My doctor will normally just use Cipro when needed..Cipro will shut things off as well..

I run into the same thing with Cipro and the dr's. No one wants to put me on it long term for the fistula. However, it's the only thing that keeps my fistula in check. When on immunosuppressants I have to be on Cipro because I get skin infections otherwise. It's not ideal to be on antibiotics long term, but it's not ideal to have Crohn's Disease either. I always say...You gotta do what you gotta do to get through the day : ) Hopefully your dr will listen to you and put you on Flagyl on a long term basis. Considering the side effects of the other meds they put us on long term, Flagyl is better. That's my opinion, though : )

I am back on flagyl, my doc said he cand keep me on it long term because it can be worse than the chrons.it cause upset somehow it the intestines. I made a mistake and maybe you can help me. I was to get blood work and a stool specimen. I forgot and it was to be before the flagyl i took 4 pills how lo

ng do I wait if I stopped the flagyl to get the tests. he said before flagyl and i just totally forgot. tongue

could that be my problem, it started in 1993, but got worse in 2001. had a hysterectomy. I got really bad and they thought it was cancer. A dr I went to did a test and found cdif. he treated me and the blood went away but I still had the diaherra but now instead of once to twice a day it was every day and every time I ate, I told him this he recommended immodium so I did the immodium, lately im up to nine aad day, thats when I got another opinion because the immodium is not working Im loosing control, flagyl is the first relief I have had since 1993,thats why i like it. Now they say its chrons with colitis. is there a end. I hope you get better soon.my doc said this is the last round of flagyl, then its asacol if that doesnt help then he is refering me to a university, because he has done all he can do I have ulcer in my small bowel. I really trust my dr so going elsewhere is upsetting, he is the first one in awhile to listen to me.

I was on flagyl (actually, tindamax, which is "super flagyl") for about 8 months for a fistula, and did well on it.  It also had side benefits of helping keep my pouchitis in check.  Unfortunately, I developed the "tinglies" and pin-prick sensations in my extremeties and neck, and had to quit it.  Was moved over to levaquin (cipro) which gave me very sore shoulders (probably tendonitis).  Now on amoxicillin which is much less powerful, but honestly - I'm doing as well on it as I was doing on flagyl, so far (about a week).   BTW, I've been taking VSL#3DS and s boulardii between doses of antibiotics for this entire period, and I do believe they've been helpful as well.

yea you are right but everytime im tested on some thing he starts a round of flagyl, so this time i quit the flagyl till i have the test aand i dont know what he is testing for. how long after flayl do you wait to be tested. I dont want to screw up the test.

well I screwed up then, I was on it a day thaen went off it and I have waited about a week, I will call him. The reason I did it is because he always put me on something then says the test wasnt acccurate, it came back negative. but I have ulcer in my small bowel and symptoms. my thought ws wait till it flairs take the test then start the flagyle. When I sugested this at dr he said no start antibiotic, maybe i wastnt clear enough with him. who knows. thanks so much, guess i gotta quit being so despeerate to find my cure, lol
