Pentasa is a maintenance drug, right?

I saw my doc yesterday urgently as I was relapsing. He told me that the intestinal pain I'm suffering from now is ungrounded since the biopsy results showed unremarkable ileal changes and mild active colitis. So, he refused my taking MTX again and decided to up my Entocort dose to 9mg for only 2 weeks and then would get down to 6mg as usual and give me Pentasa tablets only 2g since my stomach could not tolerate more. He even told me to divide the pentasa tablets among the day as I have been throwing them up lately. Also, he asked for the routine blood work and inflammation markers tests. Is Pentasa considered to be a maintenance drug, right? I don't want to relapse again.

It is not only a maint drug I was on it in cobo with remi and imuran back in the day as treatment and am back on it since weekly Humira wasnt controlling my flares enough. That combo still wasnt the best so more got added to it but initially post op they tried pentasa to keep it at bay and it didnt work nor did biweekly humira. Each person reacts diff with meds some are able to get their disease under control with an ASA drug alone there are so many severities of this DD that there is not one be all and end all way to treat

@ Tsitodawg. How are you doing and how's the NJ tube? Do you feel better now? Yes, I agree with you that I should see another doc and take a second opinion, but I'm fed up. I have already taken several opinions and they just said that this could be IBS though I have taken all possible meds for IBS for more than 10 years but in vain. It was this GI that took the risk of putting me on pred (already developed hypertension), MTX and Entocort which put my symptoms under control. A previous scope performed last summer showed that I have chronic proctitis. But since it was performed by another GI other than my GI, he refused to accept the scope and he is now questioning my having proctitis altogether since the last biopsies did not reveal any kind of proctitis. I know that I am suffering with my GI but I have to cope since he is the best in the city and if I want to see somebody else I have to travel to another country. Poor we, Crohnies, we have to suffer from a DD and at the same time bear up with an uncomprehending GI, at least in my situation.

Tsitodawg, I'm very glad that you are doing well on the NJ and that things are getting better (I'm keeping my fingers crossed). Well, you are def right. I'll see how things will go on. I'm now very constipated and haven't had a single bowel movement for more than 6 days which is very weird for me as I used to suffer from D. 9mg Entocort don't seem to kick in quickly but I'll wait.

Thank you, Tsitodawg, I'll try to take a laxative. The problem is that I have anal fissures, proctitis and hemorrhoids and was told that it is not right to use suppository laxatives (the thing I don't vomit) but it seems I have no other option.

Miralax (polyethelene glycol) dissolves completely in water and has no taste. If you can drink water (or really, anything) you should be able to use this.
