Budesonide??

Hello,

I'm new to this whole Crohn's disease problem.

Doctor says it's mild, but with the symptoms present it is impossible to think about anything else.

Pentasa is the medication prescribed, which doesn't really seem to be helping much.

Has anyone heard off Budesonide???  From internet searches and reviews it appears that it is very effective in managing symptoms.

This is a medication (steroid) similar to Prednisone but is released only at the terminal ileum and colon. Because it does not circulate through your entire body, like Prednisone, it is much less problematic. You can also go off it without tapering. I started on Budesonide when I was first diagnosed but I had problems with it. I had an allergic reaction for some reason, plus it didn't seem to do much. Prednisone was then prescribed and it was very successful in stopping the flare, despite some of the less pleasant side effects (moon face!) I think that if Budesonide works it is good. Like Prednisone, the goal is not to stay on Budesonide, but to treat a flare with it.

Once a flare is over the Pentasa you are taking should keep things under control, so keep taking it. I am largely under control with Salofalk (same as Pentasa) and have only had to do steroids twice, thank goodness.

As WriterMum has said Budesonide works only in the TI so it is only taken for Crohn's limited to the ileum and TI and not colon. I have Crohn's in both colon and intestines and take Entocort (Budesonide). I was on pred for one year and a half and couldn't not get off it except when I was switched to both Methotrexate and Entocort. I'm still on it now but the problem with it is that it is not a long-term med. Treatment should not exceed 6 months. This is my 4th month. Take care to taper it. I had a problem when I skipped it for 4 days because of a severe stomach flare up, my Crohn's flared up and I had to push it down my stomach to treat the Crohn's.
My Crohn's is too mild and I'm too on Pentasa 3g and I'm having a flare up too but my GI thinks it's because of a proctitis flare up.

HI,

DS was on Pentasa and then went onto Budesonide. He was on a full dose and then tapered off over some 3 months (or so). In his case it didn't work (did cause severe acne though!) and shortly after tapering off he want onto Azathioprine which did/does(currently) work for him.

I've been on it for almost two years and had a good remission on it - able to hold down a full time job and have a life. Will be coming off it shortly to go back on mercaptopure as unseen side effects beginning to kick in:(

I was put on pentasa when I was first diagnosed and it didn't help me at all but I had many good years on mercap until resection surgery stuffed it all up. If you don't feel the pentasa is working perserver with your specialist until they find something that works for you - all the best :)
