Tell me about
your experiences with Methotrexate, good, bad & ugly. I saw my GI today and after much discussion he script
ed MTX once a week. Now all I have to do is learn to give it to myself. I'm hoping this will also help with the arthritis symptoms that seem to be plaguing me lately.

I've been on it for about
15 months with no side effects.

Lose hair? Oh that is not an option. Well I'll have to see how it goes.

My husband had a bad experience with this med but each person is different. Do your homework well - knowing all of the side effects and adverse reactions - and then make your decision based on your needs.
Good Luck,

The most two things that were annoying were nausea and mouth ulcers. The first was manageable by taking Zofran injections before the shot. The latter could be reduced by taking folic acid supplements. Apart from these, I was doing perfectly well on it for 4 months until I got a severe stomach flare up, vomiting, nausea and was put on IV fluids and IV injections for 12 days. However, I can't blame MTX for this flare up. There were other culprits then but I was taken off it. Side effects differ from one person to the other.
Take care!

Thanks all. So of course today I'm second guessing the need to change meds (as always), but I'll give it a try. The GI's office mad me mad though. It's a clinic in a large teaching hospital and my GI's nurse was a little confused on how to bring me in for a lesson in giving myself and injection. Seriously? She acted like I should be able to do that already since I get B12, so I had to explain for the umpteenth time I don't give myself those injections. And she finally relented and said to call the day ahead and let them know when I'll be there. And they will make arrangements. She almost sounded as though it was an inconvenience to them!
Since I have a 45-60 minute drive home from there is the potential for nausea going to be a major concern? I suppose I could drop DH off at work, come in to work then go back for the shot and have him drive home. Just trying to plan ahead.

Jodi -- he mentioned pills but was convinced it would be too many to swallow (i don'think HE likes to take pills).
Anyway, I just spoke with a co worker who has RA and I know was on MTX before and she offered to show me how to inject myself. So we are going to grab a conference room and go for it one day next week. And I really trust her, she's not someone who would lie and say they could do it if not.

Don't worry. I learnt how to inject myself and I'm glad that I did that. As mentioned above, reactions differ from one person to the other but for me, nausea would hit immediately after I took the injection and I don't think I would be able to drive afterwards.
Wishing you best of luck.

The injections are supposed to have less side effect than the pills. But I can say the pills are really small and I take 5 of them.
Good luck!
