I suffer with excruciating joint pain. My GI tells me it is part of this disease. Does anyone else suffer with joint pain and if so, what do you do to cope with the pain? I find it to be debilitating at times. My only option at this point has been to just manage the pain with pain meds.

I started taking sulfazine a few years ago to help with my joint pain and it has really worked well.

If your GI is not receptive to your complaints, please go see a rheumatologist. It was my rheumy who pushed my GI hard to help me resolve my problems. I had terrible pain in my hands, wrists and elbows for a long time before I started taking sulfazine.

I had joint pain most of the time. Not excruciating but there none the less. It went away a week after I went gluten free. That was 4 months ago now. I was accidentally glutened once and woke up the next day with hands and hips in pain.
I know for me that going gluten free helped me.
I only took tylenol for pain. It never touched it though. But that's what I did for years as I was told it's just part of CD.

Thank you for your input. I have been toying with the idea of going gluten free. You have convinced me. I'm going to give it a try. I'm on Remicade now so if I can avoid another med I would prefer that. If the gluten free doesn't work, I may talk to my dr about the sulfazine.

I had pain so bad in my hips I could hardly bend, that was before my diagnosis. They put me on flagyl and it went away. I havent had flagyl for about 6 months and the pain if coming back. I am on endocort which didnot help at first but I was patient and the bleeding stopped but I still have diaherra and pain, Glutin free I do want to try but in my area its hard because its rural and they dont sell alot of it.

It's possible that the joint pain is a side effect of the remicade. some others who use that drug have complained of similar issues. Talk to your DR!

It may be. However the joint pain began before the Remicade. Prior to that I was on prednisone and Humira. I know Humira can cause joint pain. So it is possible it is all medication induced.

I do have knee pain all the time, too. My previous GI used to tell me that it's part of the disease and there is no solution. So, when things become worse, I apply Olfen gel to my knees and they become painless for some time and then the cycle starts again. I'm on Entocort and Pentasa.

I would strongly recommend that you get a rheumatologist to help you figure out what's going on.

remicade I have never been on, they say its all because of the chrons, go figure. Cant win huh!

dusty, joint pain is pretty common among those with IBD. about 20% of people with IBD complain of joint pain associated with their disease. I was just pointing out to the OP that people on Remi also complain of joint pain caused solely by the meds.

You have all been so helpful. Thanks for all the responses. I think I will look into seeing a rheumatologist. My GI mentioned it once in passing and nothing more has been said. I will ask him about it. The Remicade has worked wonders for my colon. Now if I can just get the joint pain under control, I think I might actually feel well again.
