oh, sorry.
Proctitis is inflammation in the rectum. Mesalamines are a family of drugs commonly used in treating Inflammatory Bowel Disease. They are also sometimes called 5-ASAs. They are the safest choice among the catalog of IBD treatments because they rarely cause negative side effects. Unfortunately, they are the least likely to induce remission. Many people get put on oral mesalamines along with prednisone -the pred induces remission, and the mesalamines maintain the remission.
Proctitis is difficult to treat with oral medications. The rectum is at the very very end of the colon and most oral medications will not reach there effectively. The most successful way to get rid of inflammation in the rectum is to treat with rectal mesalamines. Depending on how much (length-wise) is inflamed, you can use suppositories or enemas. The enemas treat all the way into the sigmoid colon.
Sickmama, have you been taking any meds? It's been a while since you posted and I have forgotten what decisions you've made. You need to call your DR and tell them about this latest development.
My first diagnosis was ulcerative proctitis so I'm very familiar with the bloodly mucous thing. It really needs to be treated.
