hi my mother is the one who's suffering not me but she's a complete technophobe so i'm just here to find out what living with crohns/bowel cancer is like.
my mother is petrified of hospitals and is struggling with being ill. She's been suffering for about 2 years now and only now are the doctors taking her seriously though we still haven't had a diagnosis it's either bowel cancer or crohns.
she's had an endoscopy and they tried a colonoscopy but they coudnt do it due to fissures. shes just left the house now to have a ct scan so hopefully we will have a diagnoses soon. but we're worried about the results. the waiting and not knowing is driving us round the bend.

Well Crohn's and bower cancer are 2 very different things with very different treatments. If it turns out to be either one of those her doctor will no doubt discuss the various treatment options. I can't speak about bowel cancer, but if it is Crohn's my guess is her doctor will give her some medicine to provide her quick relief, such as a steriod like prednisone, and then will discuss the different maintence treatments she can try in order to keep herself feeling well once the steriods take effect. I hope you and your mother find out what is going on soon and can start treatment. Good luck to you both!

Well, Crohn's and bowel cancer are two different things; I don't know anybody on this board who has bowel cancer instead of Crohn's.

If your mum has Crohn's, then treatment should help get her symptoms under control and ease her suffering. Living with Crohn's can range from anything from being symptom-free to being incapacitated by it. The latter is very unusual, I hasten to add; the vast majority manage to keep their disease under control most of the time and lead normal lives.

Although they are two very different things symptoms can be similar(ds has crohn's, neighbour has bowel cancer)
Passing of blood, pain, inability to eat, constipation/diahorrea, inability to put on weight, tiredness etc all could be a symptom of either tbh.

My son and neighbour have had such similar symptoms.
Try not to overly worry, either diagnosis can be daunting. What I would like to say is that son is in remission and neighbour after a year on chemo/radiotherapy has had a CAT scan(looking good) and is just waiting for results from a PET scan which hopefully will allow an operation to remove the tumour.

thanks for replying and being so nice everybody i'll try not to worry to much, she's had her ct but feels really awful at the moment. vixen i hope your neighbor gets good news.

I too was in pain and felt crappy while awaiting test results. Although my symptoms were making them think Gallbladder (made me think it too) I eventually ended up in the ER where they finally got my results and were able to get me a diagnosis of Crohn's. I am now on the meds and on my way to feeling better.

Just some encouragement for you guys, that it should get better from here.

Whatever your mum's diagnosis you are going to worry which is perfectly normal, what you have to keep in focus is that a diagnosis in itself is not the be all and end all. treatments are out there for both and if you don't like treatments/advice given, don't give up, move along to someone else.Neighbour did this as first surgeon open and shut without doing anything and it was thought game over so to speak, however a Prof took him on and hope returned.
