I am moving soon to Springfield MA and will need a Doc to treat my Crohn's, At present I am on 6MP, Remicade, and Pred PRN. It is scarey to have to leave my doc here in NY who has done such a good job with my problems, so will feel much better when I know who I could go to who treats a good batch of patients with Crohn's with meds like I have been on. Thanx for your help in advance, Frank

I grew up in Westfield, and lived there until about
3 years ago. I saw a lot of gastroenterologists in MA when I lived there. The best GI in Western Massachusetts that I saw was Dr. David Desilets at Baystate Gastroenterology. He is the Chief of Gastroenterology as Baystate Medical Center.
I'm not sure how adept he is at treating Crohn's, but I would guess that he is pretty experienced in that area. He was very thorough and helpful with me, and he's a nice guy. If you can't see him, or you want to see someone else, I would still go with someone at Baystate Gastroenterology. Baystate is a teaching hospital, and the best hospital in Western MA, so the doctors have access to better technology and newer information.
I hope this helps. Good luck!

farmacist-
I live in Westfield and have attended several seminars presented by Baystate Medical Center. I agree with Raleigh's suggestion that you look into seeing a GI at Baystate. Unfortunately the only docs I've seen are colorectal surgeons so I can't recommend a GI.
Here is their website: http://baystatehealth.com/Baystate
I use a GI at Western Mass Gastroenterology Associates. There are 7 GI's in the group located at Mercy Hosp. medical offices, 299 Carew St., Springfield, MA (413) 737-7951. I would not wholeheartedly recommend the one I'm seeing but they all seem to have good reps.
See if you can "interview" docs before making a decision. I was thinking of changing docs and was told that I could not transfer to another doc within the group. I will have to go completely outside the group. If/when I make the change, it will be to a Baystate GI.

I saw a GI at Western Mass Gastroenterology Associates as well. I was not happy with him at all. I had positive blood work for Celiac Disease, and he told me "you don't want Celiac Disease because the diet is so strict", and refused to do an endoscopy with biopsy to check for villous atrophy. I chose to follow the gluten-free diet anyway, so I'll never know if I actually have it or not.
I also ran into the same problem...I found out which of the 7 doctors was the best, and tried to switch to him. They wouldn't let me. I would avoid this practice.
ItsAlwaysSomething - I was surprised to hear that I'm not the only one from Westfield! The last time I was up there a lot had changed. I miss it sometimes. Take care.

Raleigh-
Yes...lots of changes in Westfield.
Suffering some pain from all the construction delays, but in the end I think it will be worth it.
Hope you are enjoying life in NC.
Have a great weekend.

Is there anyone here who has been to a doc at Baystate in Springfield that has treated you with Remicaid and/or 6MP. Were you happy with the Doc and where did they send you for the Remicaid treatments. Thanks again, Frank
